Travel Nurses Treat Yo’ Self

Treating yourself isn’t always the first thing on your mind.  As a travel nurse you spend most of your time thinking of others.  This Nurse’s Week it is time to treat yourself!

Clothes

Sometimes just getting a new fresh outfit can make you feel like a million bucks!  Even just buying a new shirt or pair of jeans that fits just right can make your day.  Taking time to treat yourself to a new outfit or piece of clothing is small but can make a big difference in the way you feel.

Fragrances

A new scent or even an old favorite can help your mood and lift your spirits.  It might even bring back past memories. The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses.

Massages

Massage.. need we say more?  Who doesn’t enjoy being pampered?   After working many shifts and caring for others a massage is almost a MUST.   Being on your feet for 12 hours at a time takes a toll on your body, getting a massage will help with tight and tired muscles.  It will also help you get some relaxation time.    Also, letting someone else care for you will be a nice change of pace.

Mimosas

Go out with the girls, have a guy’s night or just go have a drink by yourself.  Getting out and just unwinding with a drink and friends will help to rejuvenate you and give you a little you time.  If drinking isn’t your thing, just stick to virgin drinks and go out with friends.  It’s still time for yourself!

Fine Leather Goods

For women this one easy!  A purse ?  Guys, go get yourself a new wallet or a belt.  Better yet a nice leather jacket that can be worn all year.   If you try to stay away from leather, go for vegan leather or a faux leather!   When you look at it, you will think of the time you treated yourself for once!

While this article is meant to have a fun theme, what we are trying to say is to take time out to treat yourself!

What better way to treat yourself than with freebies or giveaways?  We have listed some freebies, giveaways and discounts offered to Nurses this week!  Remember, you need to care for yourself if you want to care for others.

Florence Nightingale: 4 Million Reasons To Celebrate

It’s Nurses Week. The Theme for National Nurses Week 2019 is 4 Million Reasons to Celebrate — a nod to nurses’ sheer numbers and an open invitation to #ThankaNurse for enriching our lives and the world we live in.

4 Million Reasons To Celebrate

With over 4 million Registered Nurses in the USA, we have a lot to celebrate. Nursing is considered one of the ‘most trusted’ occupations with the highest honesty and ethical standards of any industry.

Nursing has changed a lot in the years since Miss Florence Nightingale. However, nurses still share similar values and commitment to those of Florence Nightingale.

Today’s nurses share similar values and commitment to those of Miss Nightingale:

  • uphold a commitment to addressing many public health challenges to transform health care to focus on health and wellness, in addition to illness care.
  • commitment to delivering culturally competent care and increasing diversity and inclusion in nursing.
  • ground-breaking work as researchers, executives, educators and innovators on national and global initiatives.

Florence Nightingale

(12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910)

Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale – Trailer from Odyssey Networks on Vimeo

She is a ‘ministering angel’ without any exaggeration in these hospitals, and as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every poor fellow’s face softens with gratitude at the sight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for the night and silence and darkness have settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds.

  • She came to prominence while serving as a nurse during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers.
  • During the Crimean war, Florence Nightingale gained the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” from a phrase in a report in The Times.
  • In 1860, Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
  • International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday.
  • The first trained Nightingale nurses began work on 16 May 1865 at the Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary.
  • Her social reforms include being a pioneer in the visual presentation of information and statistical graphics.[31]
  • Improving healthcare for all sections of British society;
  • Improving healthcare and advocating for better hunger relief in India;
  • Helping to abolish laws regulating prostitution that were overly harsh to women;
  • Expanding the acceptable forms of female participation in the workforce. Wikipedia

8 Fun and Unusual Ways to Celebrate Nurses Week Coast-to-Coast

8 Fun and Unusual Ways to Celebrate Nurses Week Coast-to-Coast

Nurses week is coming and so are some really fun – and slightly weird – events across the U.S. If you can’t get away during May to celebrate, plan for one of these awesome experiences before or after your assignment and get ready for a unique adventure you’ll never forget.

Florida

Weeki Wachee: City of Live Mermaids
Ever dreamed of becoming a mermaid? Then head to Weeki Wachee for its famous “Mermaid Shows,” where you can watch “real” mermaids put on an enchanting performance in an underwater theater. Becoming a Weeki Wachee mermaid is highly competitive – and don’t think for a second that it doesn’t take immense endurance and strength to make swimming with a tail look that graceful! Head to Florida to check out this exciting, yet weird event.

Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss
Sometimes the strangest events are the most fun, and that’s certainly the case with the Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss. It’s exactly like it sounds: Participants toss mullets across the Florida state line into Alabama and see whose gets the farthest. The event has turned into a huge beach party, with hotel bookings “done months, if not years in advance.” Check it out for yourself and report back to us!

Louisiana

New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
All travel nurses assigned to Louisiana should visit the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. You’ll see apothecary jars, delicate vials and curious instruments straight out of the olden days, gaining a fascinating insight into how medicine used to look. Be sure to spot the voodoo “Love Potion No. 9” sitting on a shelf, Atlas Obscura recommended. Louisiana Jobs are plentiful.

Louisiana Mudfest
Had a frustrating week and need to unwind? The Louisiana Mudfest may be just the event for you. This quirky festival features three straight days of playing in the mud. Messy? Yes. Memorable? You bet.

Colorado

Celestial Seasonings Factory Tour
There’s no better stress reliever than a steaming mug of herbal tea at the end of a long day. You can experience tea heaven by taking a tour of the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder. Be sure to stop by the tasting room, where you can sample all 105 varieties of the brand’s teas.

Ullr Fest
Skiing is a favorite pastime in Colorado, but Ullr Fest takes it to a new level. In the state’s quaint mountain town of Breckenridge, you’ll find more than 12,000 visitors partying up Viking-style with impressive costumes and an elaborate parade. Colorado has something for all Seasons.

Maine

The Desert of Maine
Maine has some gorgeous scenery, with its rocky coastline and lush forests, but if you need a change of pace, you can visit the famous “Desert of Maine.” Some poor farming practices in the late 1700s led to the soil on this 40-acre slice of land to turn to sand and silt, Atlas Obscura explained. It’s not quite as impressive a sight as the Sahara, but still pretty neat.

Central Maine Egg Festival
At the Central Maine Egg Festival, you can see the world’s largest frying pan – it’s 10 feet in diameter and is heated by special gas burners. If that’s not enough, you can also decorate wooden eggs, cheer on competitors in the Egglympics and vote for the tastiest dish at the Quiche & Cheesecake Contest. Live music, barbecue and a farmers market round out this off-kilter but popular festival. Find your Maine Job here so you can enjoy all that Maine has to offer.

No matter what you do to commemorate Nurses Week…

we hope you feel appreciated and loved for the often-unrecognized care you provide to patients and families every day. You’re our hero.

Nurses Week: Gift Guide

Check out this Nurses Week Gift Guide for great tips on recognizing that special Travel Nurse in your life.

Nurses Week is fast approaching.

Nurses Week – May 6-12th

Do you have a travel nurse in your life? Wonder how you can thank them for this Nurses Week? We put together a holiday gift guide for the travel nurse that is good any time of the year.

Don’t forget that whatever gift you choose for your Travel Nurse, make sure it’s small and appropriate to traveling.

1.) Food

Is there a special grocery item that your traveler can’t find locally? Something that they found while traveling that they can’t stop talking about? Browse the grocery isles and find something unique to your local. (spices and snacks top this list).

2.) Homemade

Everyone loves something that has a bit of heart and thought into it. Send your traveler a box of homemade cookies or another of their favorite treats. Homemade items make great gifts.

3.) From the Kids

Travelers miss being away from grandchildren, nieces, and nephews (and other children in their life). What better than to have your little one create a hand-made card or picture to say Thank You to the traveler in your life.

4.) Everything in a Jar

I just LOVE these. You can tailor them to suit just about anyone. My favorite is the “Energy in a Jar” – Everyone knows that nursing takes everything out of you and a little boost of energy never hurts.

5.) Compression Socks

Nurses spend a lot of time on their feet. In addition, travelers often spend hours driving from assignment to assignment. Compression socks aren’t just for the elderly anymore. Check out these recommended Compression Socks that would make a great gift for any nurse this Nurses Week.
