A common trope found in modern media is the popularity of medical television shows and movies. The inner workings of the hospital, the lives of doctors and nurses, and the plethora of diseases and injuries provide a constant stream of content for networks. Medical shows pique our interest. While many of the patients are familiar with the hospital and its procedures, we are unaware of how our care is administered. As a society, we trust the trained medical professionals tasked with caring for us when we cannot care for ourselves. It is important to note that most medical shows are not claiming to be accurate in the actual administration of patient care. They serve more of a reality TV purpose, created for pure entertainment. However, when we dig a little deeper, there are underlying biases and stereotypes influencing the tone of most shows. These tropes can be detrimental to the way we are influenced to treat medical professionals of certain specialties. We asked our nurses and other clinical staff how they felt their professions are represented in the realm of medical entertainment. The overwhelming response was simple: their representation is inadequate.

Full scope of duties, never fully pictured

The most popular grievance among our nurses is that the full scope of their duties in the hospital is never fully pictured. They are generally characterized as supporting personnel and secondary caregivers. Nurses on television shows tend to be pushed around by both patients and doctors alike. They are forced to grapple with demeaning attitudes and words of contempt due to their “lowly station” in the hospital hierarchy. The Hollywood representation of their specialties is not only inaccurate but degrading. The duties which occupy nurses in the hospital are vital to the successful treatment of patients, and yet, these tasks are often overlooked. It is essential to recognize that our nurses provide the lifeline between patients and doctors, but this is not their only purpose.

Not merely the “doctor’s helpers

Nurses are responsible for the lion’s share of patient care in the hospital. They should not be portrayed as lower-class medical professionals with no influence over treatment. Our nurses shared a common sentiment; they are not merely the “doctor’s helpers” but are the backbone of every healthcare system and should be recognized as such. Standard medical shows display a relationship between doctor and nurse, which discredits the nurse’s position in the hospital and misrepresents their actual job description. In an authentic and ideal hospital setting, nurses work with doctors to provide efficient assistance. There is a degree of respect between the medical professions that ensures successful care.

Other specialties failed to be recognized

The final misrepresentation brought to our attention was how other specialties in the hospital failed to be recognized. While nurses play a vital role and should be credited, Respiratory Therapists, Certified Nurses Assistants, Emergency Medical Technicians, and so many other specialties receive even less visibility in medical dramas and comedies. Their contributions are scarcely recognized. Our staff made it clear that these professions provided irreplaceable assistance and worked hard to keep the hospital operating smoothly. They are trained in their specialty just like their fellow medical professionals and should be identified as valuable team members.

This television series was renewed for fifteen seasons after its premiere in 1994 and became a staple in the world of medical dramas. Another long-running television show, Grey’s Anatomy, failed to elicit the same amount of excitement from our nurses. They deemed it the most inaccurate Hollywood portrayal of hospital life, with inattentive and dull nurses.

The misrepresentation of nurses in modern television is a common occurrence that can influence our medical professionals’ treatment based on nothing more than stereotypes. Nurses are commonly identified in this form of entertainment as supporting personnel, with their duties seldom acknowledged. They are occasionally characterized as muted or foolish, with little to no influence over patient care. Their vital, everyday tasks in real life are excluded, their roles simplified and portrayed as merely “doctor’s helpers.” However, this is not the case nor how they should be represented. Nurses are pivotal in communicating needs to all other members of the healthcare system and advocating for their patients.

Coworkers are hardly recognized

Their coworkers who take on the title of RRT, CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), and EMT are hardly recognized for their contributions. This lack of representation of other clinical professionals continues to undermine their work and importance to the healthcare system. These stereotypes perpetuated by the Hollywood medical scene can be detrimental to our caregivers in real life. Once we can identify these biases and propagandist portrayals of medical professionals, we can treat our nurses with the respect and admiration they deserve.

There are articles published everywhere stating thoughts and opinions in dedication to helping us find it. These are editorials providing the top reasons why this certain running shoe will reduce the likely hood of shin splints or why this brand’s stainless-steel cookware is better quality than other cookware, even if the second option is more affordable.

All this to say – we are a very research-oriented society. If we are going to travel, buy an item, or eat at a new restaurant, we like putting in the research to make an informed decision. When it comes to job hunting, it is not any different. We find a job opening we want and then spend hours learning as much valuable information as we can before applying.

The decision to embark on a medical travel assignment asks the same for any interested party – perhaps it requires even more research and contemplation than a staff job. With medical travel assignments, there are multiple variables included in the equation, ultimately leading you to choose one position over another. These are the top five factors we recommend one to consider before locking in on a travel assignment: wage, location, duration, schedule, and benefits.

Wage

The hourly wage is often the top priority for many, and most of the time, it is the deciding factor for their final choice. And we understand why – you want to accept a wage that reflects all the time, effort, and money you have invested in your career. However, there are many reasons why income in the travel nursing field varies from position to position, and it is important to analyze the reasons why it fluctuates.

First, what kind of travel assignment is it? The type of work assignment will determine the wage you will receive per hour. Many staffing agencies pay their medical staff higher for emergency response than contract positions due to the intensity of the working environment and client needs. With an emergency response, you are likely to work more hours per week, while contracts depend entirely on the facility.

Another question to ask yourself is this: Are you there for the increased pay that comes with travel assignments or the experience of traveling to new locations and helping communities? For many, it comes down to a ratio, or balance, on pay versus experience. However, if you are committing to the opportunity to live in a certain city/state and enjoy your days off – you may be okay with accepting less per hour.

Location

When it comes to your work location for medical travel assignments, you need to be cognizant of what options are available for a travel assignment and an emergency response. For most emergency responses, there’s little control around when or where clients will need your specialty to come in and support an understaffed unit. If you do have the opportunity to choose your location, there are a couple of things you should think about.

How far away do you want to travel? If you are hired for a contract position, there is more wiggle room for you to venture out on your days off. Staying close to home might give your family and friends the opportunity to come visit. However, the contract location might inspire you to travel farther away to a city you have never been before, granting you the chance to explore a different part of the United States.

Emergency response, on the other hand, does not provide you with as much freedom due to the demanding nature of the deployment, plus the health and safety protocols restricting travel. So, working close to home may be a bad idea for a couple of reasons. Say you commit to an emergency response 30 minutes from where you live, but you are in lockdown at a lodging facility. Now, imagine staying that close to loved ones, yet unable to enjoy their company and your usual past times. This situation may stir up a lot of negative emotions for you. It may be in your best interest to travel a little further from home and avoid conjuring up any feelings of exile.

Duration

The length of an assignment can also be a question mark for some people. While some assignments last as short as a few weeks, others can last multiple months. The duration of time you are willing to stay for a medical travel assignment greatly depends on your personality and goals. Some individuals find it difficult to stay away from friends and family that long, while others do not mind being gone. You just need to ask yourself what you are willing or not willing to miss back home. What do you want to gain from a longer or shorter assignment? Do you want to form stronger connections with patients and staff, or do you want to come work, make money, and go back “home”?

Another key factor to bear in mind regarding the duration of an assignment is the mental toll it will take on you. Take inventory of the type of situations you tend to thrive in. Do you like the unknown or working in a busy environment? Do you enjoy a consistent schedule where you can predict your day? How would either affect you mentally? Supporting yourself financially is important but taking care of your mental health is also essential. If you are not taking care of yourself in this way, it will impact the way you care for patients. So, ask yourself these questions and answer honestly about what you can handle.

Schedule

Schedule preferences are straightforward in terms of forethought for assignments. It is a simple set of questions: How many hours do you want to work each week? Do you want to work a regular 36–48-hour schedule? Perhaps you want to work closer to 60 hours a week? In some cases, you might even work 72 hours a week. The final decision also coincides with what kind of pay and deployment type you want as well. All three factors influence each other.

The number of days off you would like also needs to be taken into consideration. Emergency deployments typically only provide one or two days off, while others may give you three to four days. This is also impacted by whether you work 12 hours, four days a week, or eight hours, five days a week.

Benefits

The option for added benefits or insurance is also something to consider while researching medical deployments. Staffing agencies offer different benefits based on the type of assignment you are working on. Emergency deployment benefits can vary depending on the staffing agency you choose to work with.

For most contract assignments, clients typically decide which benefits they want to include. Fortunately, many of them provide housing for the medical staff coming in to assist their hospital or facility. The client may also cover the cost of staying in the area or supply a stipend for groceries.


Overall, travel assignments should be selected with careful attention to detail. Many horror stories regarding bad contracts or assignments stemmed from a lack of understanding of what the requirements or compensation were for the position. By slowing down the rush to get an assignment and diligently addressing all five of the listed factors, you can assure yourself a better, more thoughtful selection for your next travel position.

Mental Health Resources: Combatting Stress Brought on by the Pandemic

The strain and stress this pandemic has put on healthcare workers is indescribable. COVID-19 created challenges healthcare workers had never faced before. At the same time, simultaneously overwhelming hospitals with patients who needed isolation at a speed many were not ready for. According to a poll done by the Washington Post in April 2021, six in 10 healthcare workers say the stress from the pandemic has harmed their mental health. If you feel like your mental health has been affected over the past two years, you are not alone. 

“Healthcare is, at its core, about improving the odds of life in its struggle against death. Of extending that game which we will all lose, each one of us unto eternity, extending it another year, month or second,” said Keith Olbermann, author, and commentator, during a special broadcast on MSNBC.  

Dealing with death has always been part of being a healthcare worker. All healthcare workers train on how to handle the post-modem process, but COVID-19 has redefined the death process. Healthcare workers have had to navigate the challenges that came with the pandemic, but the amount of death seen in such a short amount of time has greatly affected those who have been in the medical field for years, especially those who recently joined the field. 

As this pandemic has continued, images of patients in distress, dreams of perpetual alarms, goodbyes through an iPad, and repeated trauma have come home with many in the healthcare community. 

While the pandemic is not over, we wanted to build a list of resources to help with the stress many are facing and remind everyone; you are not alone. 

If you need to talk to someone immediately: 

If you are struggling with Seasonal Affective Depression:  

The Cleveland Clinic, known for its world-renowned research, has resources for working through the winter months: “Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is depression that gets triggered by a change in seasons, usually when fall starts. This seasonal depression gets worse in the winter before ending in the spring. 

Some people may get a mild version of SAD known as the ‘winter blues.’ It’s normal to feel a little down during colder months. You may be stuck inside, and it gets dark early.” 

An organization called Better Help also offers counseling at a low cost, no matter your location. Better Help was started in 2013 to offer counseling over the phone anywhere at any time in any part of the country. According to Better Help, it has more than 24,000 licensed therapists with over 20,000 reviews. We recommend checking them out, no matter what type of mental health issue you are facing. 

If you are struggling with depression/burnout: 

The American Medical Association offers many resources to help healthcare workers, specifically with burnout and recovery from injuries while practicing physical and psychological medicine. AMA is directed towards healthcare professionals and examples they may experience working on the floor with patients.   

The American Psychiatry Association also breaks down how to handle stress and anxiety. They have produced information on how to combat depression on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, there is a page with commonly asked questions about depression if you are unsure where to begin your healing journey. 

If you are struggling with PTSD:  

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has excellent resources for working through PTSD.  

According to the NIMH, “Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary or dangerous event.  

It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it. This fight-or-flight response is a typical reaction meant to protect a person from harm. Nearly everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened, even when they are not in danger.”  

Additionally, Healthline has fantastic resources for working through PTSD, including resources such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress.  

There is not just one way to begin processing the effects of this pandemic. It is recommended to find what works for you and your situation.
