Take time for yourself

Don’t forget to take care of yourself in the middle of caring for your patients. This might mean you say ‘no’ to an extra shift (which means you’re saying ‘yes’ to extra sleep or more time for adventure).

Remember your ‘why’

Having a solid reason for becoming a healthcare traveler can keep you focused when you’re having a bad week. Your ‘why’ might be supporting your family, taking a major vacation, or meeting a savings goal. Whatever it is, let it help you keep your eye on the prize.

You’ll want your travel nurse agency to be there to walk you through every step of your new life as a healthcare traveler. There’s a lot of change and adjustment in the beginning!

You might want your first assignment to be at a similar type of hospital or unit as your staff job to ease into your life as a traveler. But, don’t worry – your recruiter should be able to help you meet career goals step-by-step with each assignment.

Agency resources

When you have a question or feel stressed, your agency should be there for you. See if your agency has a clinical services team, so you can talk to someone who understands the difficulties of the job. No doubt when you are a travel nurse, it can sometimes feel like a vacation. It’s not all sun, sand, and fun, but it does offer the opportunity to see new places and explore. For most people though, even that sense of adventure can have its share of peaks and valleys. New areas are exciting, the people, the sites, the climate, even the food can bring significant joy. But what about when you first arrive and feel a bit like a fish out of water? Or have been in town a while and newness wears off? For travel nurses, loneliness can sneak up and the desire for some stability often creeps in. Pets can easily fill that void for many travel nurses. The friendship, companionship, and affection of animals have been proven to calm anxiety and boost spirits. In fact, the CDC cites the benefits of pets include decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and even triglyceride levels. So where should you start when it comes to Fido, Rover, Whiskers, or Midnight?

It may seem fairly simple at first, adopt a dog or cat and it’s a win-win for everyone. To help ensure a positive experience all around it’s worth thinking carefully about the big picture. Here are five areas worth investigating before bringing home a furry friend.

1. Housing

Consider where you will live and what the pet policy is regarding the type of animal you desire. Some places have size as well as breed restrictions; you may have to pay a pet deposit as well as monthly pet rent. If there is any damage or wear and tear that can be attributed to the pet, then you will likely forfeit all or some of your pet deposit. Pets rely on their humans for everything to survive. They typically thrive on interaction. Think about your willingness to stick by the animal through thick and thin, to be fair and compassionate to the animal. 7 Useful Things Nurses Need to Bring on a Shift

Extra Pens/Permanent Markers

Most travel nurses agree that you can never have enough extra pens and permanent markers. These are always important to have but can be easy to misplace or lose in the craziness of a shift. Bringing extras with you will ensure you always have one when you need it. Try to find pens and markers that you can easily attach to things like your badge, scrubs, or clipboards, as this will help you keep track of them. Extra Scrubs/Clothes

Unfortunately, being a travel nurse can be a bit of a messy job. Since you won’t want to go through your shift with dirty scrubs, having a backup pair in your locker is great, so you can quickly change on the fly. The same goes for bringing a backup pair of socks and shoes- wearing ones that are messy or uncomfortable not only feels bad but can be dangerous as well. If you have longer hair, extra hair ties will also be useful.

Lotion & Chapstick          

All the hand washing you do as a nurse will dry your hands out very quickly. With how annoying this can be, having lotion with you will help keep your hands moisturized and healthy. Since hospitals also tend to be rather cold and dry, try to keep some Chapstick with you, too, when your lips get chapped.

Snacks & Water

Keeping your energy levels up is crucial when you’re on the job. However, finding the time to sit down and eat isn’t always easy. Keeping something small to snack on, like a granola bar, is perfect for those times when you need a pick-me-up. Bringing a water bottle with you will also help keep you hydrated, even as you’re moving back and forth across the hospital. You might want to keep some gum in your pockets, too, so you can keep your breath nice and clean.

Phone Chargers

After a long shift, coming back to a dead phone is always a bummer, so bringing a phone charger with you will make sure that won’t happen. Having a charged phone is always useful, especially when you’re in a new area and are still getting the lay of the land.

Spare Toiletries/OTC Medicine

It helps to have a way to freshen up during or after an especially tough shift. That is why travel nurses will bring things like deodorant, toothpaste, and a toothbrush to their shifts. This gives them a chance to feel nice and refreshed and is particularly helpful if you’ve got a long shift. As for dealing with the aches and pains that come with the job, bringing some ibuprofen is a great solution.

5 Tips for Finding Short Term Travel Nurse Furnished Housing

Whether you’re an experienced travel nurse, or you’re planning your first travel experience, after you take that job, there’s one decision that can make or break your assignment; furnished travel nurse housing!

You can easily get overwhelmed online and dump a ton of time calling on fruitless ads which leave you totally frustrated…and no closer to finding a suitable property to stay in. This type of stress, sometimes called “housing fatigue”, increases every day until you secure proper furnished travel nurse housing for your upcoming job.

1.) Beware of Craigslist.com and “too good to be true” offers – they usually are!

Do you just jump on Craigslist and start making calls?  You can certainly find real housing options on Craigslist, but it comes at a cost. Frankly, you really can’t trust everything you read on Craigslist. Thankfully, other members will step in and tell them to steer clear because it’s a scam. 2.) Be cautious in checking out potential landlords online

When fielding emails from potential landlords online, remember these three rules:

  • Use your intuition ­ it’s usually right.
  • Make sure the images match the price ­If the images are incredible, but the rent is grossly underpriced, it’s most likely a scam.

3.) Vacation Rental Websites

Vacation rental websites are a good resource to consider. Some of the most popular are HomeAway, VRBO, and Airbnb. You can find some great housing options on these sites, and for the most part, they keep the scammers away. You simply punch in a city or a state, and you’ll be able to view tons of vacation rentals.  Just like any site, you’ll need to filter out the properties that don’t make sense for you…like that 6 bedroom mansion that sleeps 18 people.

Most likely, you’re looking for a reasonably priced studio or 1 bedroom near the hospital where you’ll be working. Once you narrow your search results down a bit, you’ll need to dive into the availability of each property. This is usually where the proverbial asterisk or caveat in your search rears its ugly head; since most of the vacation rentals can be booked online in advance, finding a place that can host you for your entire 13-week stay can be challenging…but not impossible. When contacting property owners on these sites, operate with the 10% rule in mind; only 10% of the property owners you contact will actually respond. Knowing this, to make VRBO/HomeAway/Airbnb work for you, try to send out a lot of availability requests.

4.) Traveling Healthcare Rentals: Monthly Furnished Housing Without Booking-fees.

By now, you’re probably pretty familiar with vacation rental sites like HomeAway, VRBO and Airbnb, and many of you may already have used sites like these to secure housing in the past. They can certainly work out in a pinch, but knowing that your contracts are typically 2-3 months at a time, booking vacation rentals for travel nurse housing can really rack up the extra fees.

A Big City With Not Enough Nurses:

One of the biggest concerns with natural disasters revolves around the amount of people that are directly affected and displaced by the tragedy. Location has a lot to do with the severity of a storm. Urban areas are becoming increasingly overpopulated in our modern times. The more people that are affected, the more severe the disaster becomes.

Disaster response and emergency management specialists have been studying the rising cases of displacement due to natural disasters. As Eastern Kentucky University notes, urbanization is to blame for displacement, not the natural disaster itself. This is because so many large cities are improperly zoned and ill-prepared for large scale evacuations and disasters. Houston, certainly, suffered from this problem. It is a notoriously unregulated place in terms of zoning laws. Many of the expansions within Houston city limits have inhibited drainage. Unfortunately for the citizens of Houston, flooding was inevitable. Primarily due to poor urban planning.

Job Demands for Travel Nurses During a Natural Disaster

For travel nurses, this means jobs within the disaster zone will be in very high demand for months after a natural disaster. To add to the problems, many urban cities already suffer from nurse and physician shortages. Natural disasters only escalate the need for qualified professionals.

According to 2016 data provided by the Texas Health and Human Services: Texas is especially prone to a nursing shortage before 2030. The report continues to note: “By 2030, the supply of RN FTEs is expected to grow by 35.4% to 271,667, while demand will grow by 53.8% to 331,638, leaving a deficit of 59,970 RN FTEs.”

With the sudden need of medical help resulting from a natural disaster, travel nurses can be used to temporarily fill the gap. Alleviating stress for the overburdened hospitals in the area. However, assignments in natural disaster situations aren’t for everyone.

Not Your Average Nursing Assignment

Some of the most common organizations that employ volunteer nurses during natural disasters are the American Red Cross and RN Response Network (RNRN). Both of these organizations work hard to deploy nurses in crisis areas, but not all nurses will be up for the job.

For nurses on the front lines, life can be especially difficult. Many nurses will be working in less-than-ideal conditions (such as pop-up tents), and will be faced with all the stress that comes with crisis care. Many nurses may work extended hours, with little down time and even fewer chances to catch up on sleep. Burnout and and will most likely happen. Nurses will need to be prepared to counteract and deal with this unique type of stress.

For some nurses, the satisfaction they feel from helping those in crisis will be well worth the mental, physical, and emotional labor. Nurses with a strong internal constitution will fit in well with crisis care.

If something goes wrong at the hospital you are assigned to, or you have questions about your paycheck, you should be able to call, e-mail, or text your recruiter and get a prompt, honest response. A great recruiter will have your back, be your advocate, and make things right.  Some agencies may even have additional resources available, such as specialists or clinical support who may know what you’re going through more than your recruiter would.

Personality to Match

Recruiters talk to people all day, and that’s not for everyone! The best recruiters truly enjoy talking with people and solving problems. A recruiter that finds meaning and enjoyment in helping nurses get the best assignments is the type of recruiter you want to work with.

It’s important to find a recruiter that understands your personality and is able to match your comfort level. Make sure you communicate when you prefer to be contacted, how often, and other important details, to avoid frustration later on.

Well Organized

Look for a recruiter that has tools in place to help you manage your documentation renewals, continuing education credits, and other license needs. They are there to help guide you through the process, whether it’s your first assignment or tenth.

Follow Up

If you never hear from your recruiter after you accept an assignment, consider this a red flag! A good recruiter will ask what type of communication you prefer (phone, e-mail, text), as well as how frequently you’d like them to check-in. The best recruiters will also check in with you after your first day to see how things went and if there’s anything you need.

Worth the Referral

Find a recruiter who makes you want to refer them. Nearly all travel agencies offer some type of referral bonus, but look for a recruiter that you want to refer other nurses to not only because of the great referral bonus you get but because you genuinely think they provide a travel nursing experience that should be shared.

Finding an ideal recruiter and developing a great relationship with him or her is the key to having a successful travel nursing career. Furthermore, a great recruiter relationship will pave the way for you to get the jobs you want and provide support before, during, and after each assignment.

However, phone interviews are so common in travel nursing since assignments are all over the country. To make phone interviews easier, treat these conversations like a two-way street. Not only are they evaluating if you are the right fit for the assignment, you should assess if the hospital and position is the right fit for your needs, skills, and experience.

1.) Do: Dress for the Job You Want

It can be tempting to wear your pajamas and do your phone interview from bed. However, taking a shower, getting dressed and getting settled in a quiet place will do a lot to make you feel prepared and confident!

2.) Don’t: Express a Negative Attitude

If you’ve had former bad experiences at an assignment, or a co-worker you didn’t get along with, spare the details. A positive attitude should shine through in your interview. Be honest with your answers, but keep things as upbeat as possible. Focus on what positive came out of a bad situation.

3.) Do: Your Homework

Research what some common travel  nursing interview questions are, and write out your answers in advance so you’ll know how you want to respond. It’s also a good idea to do some research on the hospital’s background. If it comes up in the interview, you’ll impress the interviewer.

4.) Don’t: Be Shy

It can feel awkward to brag about yourself, but this isn’t the time to be shy! Have you received any awards or promotions in past positions? Did you take the lead in a crisis situation on the floor? Be proud of your accomplishments, and talk about them!

5.) Do: Ask Questions

Show your interest in the assignment by asking questions about the job. Ask what some of the challenges or perks are about working at the facility, or the particular department. You can even ask, “Do you think I’m a good fit for the assignment?” Asking “Are there any reservations that you have about my ability to do this job that we can address now?” shows confidence and a proactive attitude.

6.) Don’t: Go Silent After the Interview

Chances are, if the interview goes well, you’ll hear back from your recruiter pretty quickly. Make sure to get the interviewer’s e-mail address and send a message thanking him or her for the opportunity to interview. It also never hurts to send a handwritten thank you note!

With proper preparation, travel nurse phone interviews don’t have to be stressful or something to dread. It’s a great opportunity to learn about new assignments, let your personality and experience shine, and find the perfect fit for your next travel adventure!
