Written By: Taylor Dupont, Marketing Specialist, Medical Edge Recruitment

Travel nursing has emerged as a dynamic and rewarding career path for many healthcare professionals. With the growing demand for nurses in various locations across the country, travel nursing agencies play a pivotal role in connecting nurses with temporary job opportunities. In this guide, we will explore what travel nursing agencies are, their functions, and the numerous benefits they provide to nurses.

What Are Travel Nursing Agencies?

Travel nursing agencies are specialized recruitment firms that help healthcare facilities find qualified nurses, typically for short-term assignments. These assignments usually last anywhere from 8 to 26 weeks but can be as long as 1-3 years, allowing nurses to work in diverse environments while exploring new places. Agencies serve as the bridge between hospitals, clinics, and healthcare providers needing staffing assistance and nurses seeking flexible employment.

The Role of Travel Nursing Agencies

Travel nursing agencies perform several critical functions, including:

1. Job Placement: Agencies actively seek job opportunities for travel nurses in various healthcare settings, from hospitals to clinics to long-term care facilities. They match nurses with positions that fit their skills, experience, and preferences.

2. Licensing and Credentialing Support: Each state has its licensing requirements, and travel nursing agencies assist nurses in navigating these complexities. They help ensure that all necessary credentials are up to date, allowing nurses to focus on their work without worrying about administrative hurdles.

3. Negotiating Contracts: Travel nursing agencies often negotiate contracts on behalf of nurses, ensuring they receive competitive pay and benefits. This includes discussing salary, housing stipends, travel reimbursements, and other perks that can significantly enhance a nurse’s compensation package. It’s important to note that negotiations typically occur before the facility and agency finalize their partnership for contract positions. As a result, by the time a nurse is offered a position, the pay is usually fixed and may not be negotiable any further.

4. Support Services: Agencies provide ongoing support to travel nurses throughout their assignments. This includes 24/7 assistance, guidance on adapting to new work environments, and resources for personal and professional development.

5. Community Building: Many agencies foster a sense of community among travel nurses by organizing events, networking opportunities, and online forums. This support system helps nurses connect with peers, share experiences, and build friendships.

Benefits of Using a Travel Nursing Agency

1. Flexibility and Variety

One of the most appealing aspects of travel nursing is the flexibility it offers. Nurses can choose assignments based on their interests, desired locations, and career goals. This allows for a change of scenery and the chance to experience different healthcare systems and cultures.

2. Competitive Compensation

Travel nursing often comes with higher pay rates compared to staff nursing positions. Agencies typically offer competitive salaries, along with additional benefits like housing stipends, travel reimbursements, and bonuses. Nurses can significantly boost their earnings while enjoying the perks of travel.

3. Personal and Professional Growth

Working in various healthcare settings allows nurses to expand their skills and knowledge. Exposure to different practices, technologies, and patient populations enhances clinical competencies and fosters adaptability. This diversity is invaluable for career advancement and personal development.

4. Reduced Administrative Burden

Travel nursing agencies take care of many administrative tasks, such as contract negotiations, licensing, and credentialing. This allows nurses to focus on patient care and their own well-being without being bogged down by paperwork and bureaucracy.

5. Adventure and Exploration

Travel nursing is a unique opportunity to explore new cities and regions while working. Nurses can take advantage of their free time to visit local attractions, experience different cultures, and meet new people. This sense of adventure can lead to personal fulfillment and lifelong memories.

6. Health Benefits

Many travel nursing agencies offer comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance. This is a significant advantage, as it ensures that nurses have access to necessary healthcare services while on assignment.

How to Choose the Right Travel Nursing Agency

Selecting the right travel nursing agency is crucial for a successful experience. Here are some tips to help you make an informed choice:

1. Research Multiple Agencies: Don’t settle for the first agency you come across. Research several options to compare their offerings, reputation, and benefits.

2. Check Reviews and Testimonials: Look for feedback from other travel nurses. Online forums, social media groups, and review websites can provide insights into the experiences of fellow nurses.

3. Evaluate Support Services: Consider the level of support the agency provides. Are they available 24/7? Do they offer guidance during assignments? Strong support can make a significant difference in your travel nursing experience.

4. Understand Contract Terms: Carefully review the contract terms, including pay rates, benefits, and any stipulations. Ensure you fully understand what you are signing up for.

5. Assess Opportunities for Advancement: Some agencies offer additional training, certifications, or opportunities for career advancement. Consider agencies that align with your long-term career goals.

Travel nursing agencies serve as essential partners for nurses seeking flexibility, adventure, and professional growth. By connecting nurses with job opportunities and providing invaluable support, these agencies help facilitate a rewarding travel nursing experience. As the demand for nurses continues to rise, travel nursing offers an exciting avenue for healthcare professionals to explore new horizons while making a meaningful impact in the lives of patients across the country. If you’re ready for your next adventure, consider partnering with a travel nursing agency to take the first step toward an exciting and fulfilling career in travel nursing!

Why Work with a Travel Nurse Agency?

Medical Edge Recruitment provided this article.

Written by: Emily Fernandes, Recruitment Consultant, Medical Edge Recruitment

You spent years at school, have just graduated, and now you are a nurse. Congratulations! You are ready to get to work, and you can’t wait to live your life’s passion of being a caretaker. You are eager for the best opportunities, and you want to be a Travel Nurse, but where do you start?! There are so many states, contracts, and specialties – it’s confusing and overwhelming.

You are searching job boards, but you’re stuck because you can’t seem to find anything that you like. The jobs are all in very different environments and specialties. The hotel charges and rates don’t seem to make sense. You didn’t expect this and to be honest, even as a seasoned pro in the game, you may have issues finding the best contract. Then, you talk to other nurses and are surprised at how different your offers are. Finding a good job is a daunting task! What do the other travel nurses have that you don’t? Their secret is a great Travel Nurse Agency!

One of the greatest benefits of being a travel nurse is that there are so many options to choose from. Not just with specialties or facilities but also with the types of employment you want or how many shifts you want to work. You can work full time, on a contract basis, or as needed (PRN) in a variety of healthcare facilities nationwide. Additionally, you can work with an agency that allows you to choose your shifts or do short-term contracts that best suit your schedule and job needs. Even if you are working full-time, you can pick up shifts through an agency on the side to broaden your skills or make more money!

There are many benefits to working with a Travel Nurse agency:

1. Better pay

As a nurse with an agency, you are given a much better pay rate. Your hourly increases as much as 50% and could be double if you are prepared to take shifts like weekends and nights or work overtime.

2. Better Control of Your Schedule

Need a day off? No problem. You have control over the shifts you want to work. Working PRN allows you to choose the best days and shifts that suit your lifestyle. Per diem nursing makes it possible and easy to balance work and home life effectively. You pick your schedule and control your family time.

Need a change of scenery? Not just a new facility, but maybe a new state? Most nursing agencies work with a variety of facilities throughout the US. You can also stay in-state but travel to different facilities and expand your skillset.

3. Less Stress

Take workplace politics off your radar. You show up, save the day, do your work, and clock out.

Interpersonal relationships that develop at work with coworkers, patients, or families can become catalysts of stress for many nurses. By working as a per diem nurse, you’ll be able to remain in neutral territory, and if there’s a particular facility that you don’t quite vibe with, then you don’t have to go back.

Working as a full-time nurse can leave you feeling stretched thin and lead to burnout. As a travel nurse, you get to do actual nursing. Isn’t that what you got into the profession for? Not handling complaints, emailing the director, or doing stocktaking.

4.      Variety and Adaptability

Most agencies are already contracted with multiple facilities, so you get diversity and always have a guaranteed contract. If you are working in Colorado and decide you want to go to Idaho in the next two weeks, it’s 100% possible because agencies always have openings and always bargain the best packages and rates for their providers. So, if you just got off a 13-week assignment and are ready to jump on a 9-week, don’t worry! An agency makes it possible in a flash.

Burnout is a real threat for nurses. Per diem shifts allow nurses to minimize the risk of emotional and physical exhaustion while also developing new skills and offering their minds a change of pace.   You learn to adjust to new locations and demographics quickly. You learn to connect, communicate, and care for individuals quickly and without difficulty. Another perk to working with an agency is the inside scoop you get on each facility. Not just from their clients but from other travelers who are able to help you be prepared for the culture and workload!

5.      More Support and Better Relationships

We often see platforms advertising about reimagining healthcare. Their plans often focus on the patients and equipment but rarely on our #1 asset – our nurses! To reimagine healthcare, we must reimagine a healthcare provider’s experience! Nurses are the beating hearts of the medical system and need 100% support.

Through an agency, you get to work with a recruiter who doesn’t just find you jobs but also provides 24/7 support. They become your friend and defender. They battle on your behalf to make sure you are always comfortable, always employed, and generally much happier. They take the stress of dealing with the backend stuff, so you don’t have to!

An agency is the first step to having the support you need and the peace of mind you deserve after dealing with difficult patients. Recruiters learn your history, your strengths, your interests, and other important information about you that can help find the absolute best job fit. This creates a space where you can ask questions, voice concerns, and gain advice when needed. Working with a travel nurse staffing agency gives you a support system you can contact day or night. You get help with housing options and always stay in the loop to have the best assignments! As Lexi Saige said, “A nurse is compassion in scrubs,” and a nurse deserves that same compassion in return!

New Year, New Travel Nurse Agency: When is it Time to Change Travel Nursing Agencies?

AB Staffing Solutions provided this article.

New Year, new travel nurse agency?

It’s a new year—time to keep what is working in your life and an opportunity to change what isn’t working. If your travel nursing agency isn’t working the way you had hoped, it’s a great time to consider other options. Talking to your recruiter, exploring other agencies, and thinking about what is good or bad about your current agency will help you make the best decision.

When is it time to change travel nursing agencies?

Before jumping agencies, make a list of what you like and dislike about your current agency.

  • What was the onboarding process like?
  • What type of assistance do they offer for housing?
  • What do you need for yourself and your family and/or pets?
  • Is the agency meeting your needs in terms of career goals?
  • Are there options for different placements?

As you answer these questions, it will become clear whether it is time to change travel nursing agencies. Here are some ideas to help you decide when it’s time to change or even just add a new travel nurse agency to your mix of options.

Problems with your recruiter.

How responsive is your recruiter? Are you being ghosted, or are they available to help you? If they’re stringing you along or, worse, not responding to you, it is time to ask for another recruiter. Most recruiters pride themselves on not only attracting new travelers but on retaining their existing travelers too. This means being available whenever you need them. Whether it’s a question about housing, a new contract, or listening to your concerns, our recruiters find answers and solutions for you.

Communication issues.

Is the agency disorganized or unclear when they communicate with you? This could be a sign of a larger organizational problem. You deserve a certain level of service, and if you’re not getting it, it might be time to look elsewhere. Some agencies have all departments under one roof, so you can easily work with your recruiter, credentialer, and even the payroll department to get questions answered quickly. Agencies that offer this tend to have an advantage when it comes to communication with their travelers.

Job Opportunities.

Many travelers have specific career goals in mind. Some want to expand their area of expertise, while others want to gain experience in a new area. Still, there are others who want to work in different geographic locations as they slow their career. If the agency doesn’t have the job opportunities that align with your goals, talk to them. If you’re still not satisfied, it might be time to explore other options.

Referral or Recommendation.

Changing travel nursing agencies may be as simple as being referred to another agency, like AB Staffing, by a relative or colleague. Make sure to do research to ensure that the recommended agency has what you desire, including job opportunities. There might not be anything particularly negative about your current agency. However, you might have a friend or family member who works for another agency that they highly recommend.

It’s okay to work with more than one agency.

Many of our travelers are in communication with two or three agencies at a time. This gives them, and you, more options in location, positions, and even pay. Recruiters are aware of this and don’t ever take it personally. They understand that if you can find your desired location, shift, or pay elsewhere, then you should take the contract that’s best for you.

General unhappiness with your current agency.

As when you work at a medical facility, working with an agency requires you to be professional and levelheaded, even when frustrated. Express your concerns, and let them try to change, but if that doesn’t happen, it’s time to find a new travel nurse agency.

Changing travel nursing agencies shouldn’t be a decision to make likely. Take time to communicate with your current agency. Think about your career goals and family needs. Talk to other travelers and see what their experiences have been with different agencies to make the decision that is best for you.

5 Signs of a Great Travel Nursing Agency

Are you having trouble looking for the best travel nursing agency? Apart from assessment skills, experience, and intuition in the field of nursing, discovering the right nursing agency for yourself needs some proper analysis. If you aspire to take up a nursing career on the road, you must consider a few signs.  Nurse staffing is a highly demanding profession, and it needs proper care and responsibility, to a great extent.

Before choosing the right nursing agency for yourself, you must keep in mind certain liabilities and be skeptical about the agencies you look for. The following are the top characteristics that make for a great travel nursing agency

1. Does the agency provide Variety in Travel Nursing Jobs?

As an aspiring travel nurse, you must make sure the company or agency you want to work for has contracts. More contracts will help you to get an excellent job as a travel nurse. A good company should be able to offer you contracts, ranging from 4 weeks to about 26 weeks; the most basic arrangement is a contract of 13 weeks. Make an inquiry in the company, about how many contracts are available.

You may be a Registered nurse specializing in running and analyzing diagnostics tests, or a Licensed practical nurse specializing in no-fear dentistry, and a great travel agency should be able to provide you with a suitable job.

The agency should provide you with a wide range of assignments, as per your specialty, and should give you a scope to push yourself professionally.

2. Will the agency give you Comprehensive Benefits?

The best nursing agencies will offer you lots of benefits like medical insurance options, free housing facilities, life insurance, and expenses for traveling, insurance of liability, free courses for education, retirement perks, and more. Be sure to ask your company if they can offer contracts that offer definite hours. Whether the company will pay your fees of licensing and housing facilities if you are trying to apply for work in some other state and how much of the benefits will cover you.

You will also need to have a fair idea about the agency’s support system. Ask them if they can provide you with clinical connections and stall that’ll assist you when you face problems.

3. Does the agency Provide Longevity and Expertise?

There is a lot of competition in the field of travel nursing in today’s world. A right travel nursing agency is one that has survived and received success in the market. If the recruitment staff of an agency has continued to work for the company for an extended period, it is a sign that the agency is a good one. A right agency is one that will document your specialties, location preferences, and interests, and anticipate suitable jobs for you. Don’t be hesitant to ask them about their experience in the industry. Ask them questions regarding their agency, if you have any doubts. Check their profile on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. to know about their company.

4. Are your Recruiters Friendly & Helpful?

You will know an agency is right when you hear positive reviews about it from nurses who have already been working for some time, not just about the bonus and comprehensive benefits but also about the good experiences you can gather from the agency. Your recruiter is one of the essential elements of the right nursing agency. Establishing a good relationship with your recruiter is a crucial part of a successful travel nursing career. As a fresher, it is your recruiter who will guide you in your assignments. Your recruiter will pave the way for the right jobs for you. You must not shy away from inquiring about your recruiter about the agency and your work. Your recruiter will give you valuable information that will help you to establish an idea about that agency.

5. Is the agency Right for You?

Finally, you must select a company where you will feel comfortable, safe, and at home. It is the responsibility of your recruits to make you feel comfortable. Select a company that you will be able to trust and where you will get good placements. Your company should be able to fulfill the goals that you have in mind to become an excellent travel nurse. If, after all the inquiry, you find something fishy or not right about the agency, back out immediately.

Communication is vital, especially if you are new to your job. Your agency must also assure you that you will be able to contact your team or recruiter ASAP, in case of a problem or emergency.

The right agency will pave the way

If your agency passes these five tests, then you can easily consider it as a great travel nursing agency, right away! The right agency will pave the way for your goal to serve people and bridge the gap between healthcare and people. With the proper guidance from helpful and friendly recruiters and comprehensive benefits, you will not only be able to have your dream job but also get the best benefits. So, get going!

The Top Five Things to Look for in a Travel Nurse Agency

This article is provided by Travel Nurse Across America®

Ready to start your first travel nursing adventure and not sure where to start? There are a lot of travel nursing agencies and options available, and it can be confusing to know which one to pick. Here are the top five things you should consider when choosing a travel nursing agency to partner with.

1.) Agency Reputation

There are a lot of travel nursing agencies out there. Make sure to research the companies on industry-relevant sites such as The Gypsy Nurse Agency List. You can even get a good grasp on other sites such as Facebook or Google. Be sure to start a relationship that will benefit your career most by picking an established, experienced agency that will be around for the long run. The number of jobs an agency has listed can sometimes be deceiving, but you definitely want to make sure they offer wide availability within your specialty and desired travel destination(s).

2.) The Total Package

Travel agencies offer a myriad of benefit options that can be difficult to navigate. Look for agencies that offer transparent benefit information right on their website. Be careful not to pick the first agency that offers the highest pay rate or salary. There are so many other benefits to consider that could end up making the total package worth much more.

When beginning your assignment, will you have a gap in insurance coverage? Look for an agency that is also looking out for your best interests. Day one benefits and assistance to help you get to your assignment are game-changers when getting started. Once you’re on your assignment, what happens if you keep getting sent home due to low census? Most companies advertise guaranteed pay, but what does it really cover? Make sure you’re protected when sent home due to low census, so your paycheck doesn’t suffer from something you had no control over.

Other benefits to look for are weekly pay, medical, dental, and vision insurance, sick pay, free continuing education, and referral bonuses. You should also ask about other incentives and bonuses (such as extension bonuses or incentives for working extra shifts) that are offered and might be important to you – the best agencies will reward their loyal travelers. Some travel agencies even offer pet insurance, which can be a real advantage if you travel with your pets!

3.) Your Recruiter

Your recruiter is your advocate, and your relationship with your recruiter is crucial regardless of the agency you choose to travel with. Once you begin your travel assignment, your recruiter should be with you every step of the way. Sometimes, you’ll need to get additional certifications or licenses for a new assignment, and your recruiter should help you do get them, and the agency should be willing to pay for them. The best recruiters will provide a checklist, and call you to check-in after you start your assignment to make sure things are going smoothly. Be sure to tell your recruiter how you like to be contacted, and how often you prefer them to check-in.

4.) Housing Options

One of the top questions you might ask yourself before you consider a travel nursing job is, “Where will I live?!” The best agencies will make moving to your travel destination as easy as possible and offer multiple options. Great agencies have a housing department dedicated to helping you find housing and offer to find high-quality, fully furnished private housing with 100% utilities paid, which is one less thing for you to do. Additionally, some agencies also offer an “Easy Stay” program that allows you to choose your own housing with a housing subsidy.

5.) Expert Specialists

Many highly-rated agencies have specialized departments that will help you get ready for your assignment and support you while you are traveling. Your recruiter should be your main contact, though the best agencies will have various departments that provide specialists to guide you before and during your travel nursing journey. The support offered by your travel nurse agency, as well as how much experience the person you’re speaking with has can be a factor in how smoothly your assignment goes. A travel nurse is expected to have a certain number of years’ experience before traveling, so wouldn’t you want your recruiter to be experienced as well? Look for a travel nurse agency that invests in hiring recruiters with enough experience to answer any question you have, before you even have to ask.
