Two Travel Nursing Destinations for the Mountain Lover

The Mountains are calling, and I must go! -John Muir

If you’re a mountain lover, adventure seeker, and love to travel to destinations that feed your passion, here are a couple of places worth considering.

Colorado

There are few major cities in America where you can be a short drive to hiking trails, mountains, waterfalls, canyons, and urban amenities. Colorado has so much to offer with its majestic Rocky Mountains range in every direction. Colorado travel assignments might just be for you if you like a winter wonderland. Colorado offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the U.S., with Vail and Aspen as two of the most popular destinations.

Personally, Breckenridge is a favorite of mine. The moment you arrive, you feel a contagious energy, a laid-back mountain vibe, and a fun-loving sense of adventure that calls out the freedom-seeker in all of us! You will feel right at home, and honestly, you may not ever want to leave. For those who prefer to stay off the slopes but still want to experience all that winter has to offer, Colorado offers plenty of opportunities to snowshoe, snowmobile, or cross-country ski.

My first travel assignment was in Colorado Springs; it quickly stole my heart and is still one of my most favorite assignments. It is a gem of a city! Depending on your specialty and time of year, there are usually an abundance of travel nursing options in Colorado. If you are looking for a relaxing lifestyle in a town with natural beauty that offers awesome outdoor opportunities available year-round, you definitely need to add this town to your bucket list.

Staying fit and healthy is a priority of the locals, and it is a very pet-friendly town. Pikes Peak is the most famous natural attraction in the region, and you can enjoy hikes up to the 14,000-foot summit. In Colorado, you can be in the urban city but have the option to head to the mountains for a quick getaway in minutes!!

* Mentor Tip: If you are up for a big challenge, make sure to check out the extreme rated, heart-pounding Manitou Incline Hiking trail where you gain over 2,000 vertical feet in less than a mile climbing 2,744 stairs to reach the summit where there are stunning panoramic views. Trust me, the views at the top are well worth the effort!

Montana

I saved the best for last. I must warn you, proceed with caution because Big Sky Country will likely steal your heart, and you may never want to leave. As soon as you cross state lines into Montana, you get this laid-back, easy pace way of life vibe. You can follow the Rockies all the way up through into western Montana into the northern region where the Canadian Rockies begin. There are jagged peaks, pristine water, and abundant wildlife in every direction.

Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier National Parks are all worth visiting while in this area. In my opinion, Glacier National Park steals the spotlight. It is land of mountain ranges carved by prehistoric ice rivers full of alpine meadows, deep forests, waterfalls, about 25 glistening glaciers, and 200 sparkling lakes. The vistas seen from Going-To-The-Sun Road are breathtaking, a photographer’s paradise.

Relatively few miles of road exist in the park’s 1,600 square miles of picturesque landscape, thus preserving its primitive and unspoiled beauty. It offers tons of hiking trails and backcountry camping and hiking. Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, and Kalispell, are all cities that often have travel nursing needs. I was able to spend 9 months in Kalispell as a traveler to help them open up a brand new Children’s Hospital. As a traveler, you get to enjoy the breathtaking views of vast forests, rugged mountains, and green meadows, which will make your assignment an unparalleled adventure. Montana is truly the Last Best Place.

*Mentor Tip: Montana is Grizzly Bear country and hiking in these areas requires some preparation and planning. Make sure to educate yourself on Bear Safety and understand the proper way to secure your food. Make sure to always carry bear spray and know how to use it; it could save your life. Also, this is NOT the place to hike alone, and if you do, that is a risk you assume. Try to hike with groups of 3 or more and make lots of noise when on the trails.

Being able to have endless adventures in the mountains is one of the many perks of becoming a traveling nurse. The mountains are a place to go to feel fully truly alive.

This is just a glimpse of the incredible locations travel nurses can enjoy while on assignment. Want to learn more? Contact Brandy@travelnurse101.com today to schedule your complimentary 1:1 mentor session.

What are the Benefits of Travel Nursing to a Small Town?

An exciting part of travel nursing is traveling around the country and experiencing life in all the major cities, but with COVID-19 numbers declining and travel nurse needs in hospitals decreasing, finding your next travel assignment might be more difficult. One solution might be to look for an assignment in a small town or midsize town. It is easy to overlook a city you have never heard of, but there are benefits to accepting a travel assignment in a small or midsize town. Here are six listed below.

1. Open Positions

The need for travel nurses in big cities has declined with the declining COVID-19 numbers, which results in fewer jobs and lower wages. But Small or midsize towns still have a need for nurses. Even before COVID, many small towns struggled to keep patient ratios down due to the lack of well-educated nurses in their local areas. Next time you have a conversation with your recruiter, investigate smaller, less familiar towns.

2. Lower Cost of Living

The cost of living in a small town is less than in a big city. You may think, “Well, my company will pay for my housing.” That may be true, but it is not just housing that costs less. Groceries can be cheaper. Shorter commutes to work mean saving money on gas. If you choose to find your own housing, you may find a better deal in a small town than in a big city.

3. No Traffic

Living in a smaller town can be beneficial for your work commute. From my own personal experience of moving from Denver, CO, to Springfield, IL, I noticed my 30–40-minute commute went down to 15-20 minutes with no traffic issues. This was not just helpful for my work commute, but it was quicker and easier to grocery shop, find my way around, go to the gym, get coffee, and more.

4. Small Town Charms

The most amazing part about traveling to a small town is all the small-town charm you will find. Chain restaurants and stores are great for predictability, but nothing beats the unique finds of a mom-and-pop restaurant or family-owned store. Homemade cookies, jams, jellies, honey, and even wine from a local country store can be a life-changing experience. The idea of “shop local, buy local” has more meaning when you can purchase homemade goods from the people who make them. You might even find yourself making friends and connections you will keep for life at the corner diner or local coffee shop.

5. More Big Cities to Visit

When looking at small-town locations, you might find that many are located within just a few hours’ drive of a big city or two. . If you have a goal to see as many cities as possible, this is a terrific way to knock a few off your list with one assignment. For example, from my current location of Springfield, IL, there are three major cities, all within a 3–4-hour drive or train ride. Chicago is about 3 and a half hours away. Indianapolis is about 3 hours away. St. Louis is less than 2 hours away. All are great for a weekend getaway without the hassles of living in a big city.

6. More Nature to Get Lost In

If outdoor recreation is a passion of yours, small towns are a wonderful place to find nature. The whole reason small towns exist is because they are surrounded by unoccupied land. Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon are not the only national parks worth seeing. Every state has their own national parks to visit. Anywhere you find mountains, rivers, lakes, or even beaches, you can find a small-town hospital in need of nurses nearby.

Melbourne, FL is a midsize city in central Florida. It is about 3 hours north of Miami, 2 hours east of Orlando, and sits right next to intercoastal waterways. It is about a 15-minute drive away from the Atlantic coast beaches. Whether you are in the Midwest, South, East Coast, or West Coast, there are small towns surrounded by nature.

The draw of a big city can be exciting, but traveling to a smaller mid-size city or small town also has its benefits. Next time your nurse recruiter mentions a city you have never heard of, do not discount it right away. Instead, do some research, see where it is located, and ask yourself these questions. Is it close to a big city you have wanted to visit? What is the cost of living? What small town charms might it hold? Nursing is stressful. Moving is stressful. Maybe for your next assignment, a smaller, easier place to live is just the thing you need.

Have you taken an assignment in a small town and loved it? Comment your experiences below!

The Five Districts of New York and Me

When working in New York, you may ask, “This is wonderful, but what else is there to do here after I finish working?” Well, that’s what I am here to do. I am here to tell you what we do in all five parts of the Big Apple.

The five districts of New York

New York

The Bronx

First, we will start in my neck of the woods, the Bronx. The Bronx is the third district one would think of when they think of New York, right there after Manhattan and Queens. Though it is third place to others, to me, it is first place. Although mostly urban, this district is home to many parks and places where you can enjoy the culinary culture of New York.

Two of the most prominent and most recognizable places that are a must to check out are both the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Garden. Both of these places represent the majesty of surprisingly how much nature we really see here. If you are an avid nature enjoyer, I suggest these two beautiful spots to have a good sense of city vs nature. While these places are beautiful, they could be a walk from where you are, and I bet one would be hungry after that adventure.

Well, have no fear, for the Bronx has many delis and spots one can go to satisfy their hunger. Although all districts have the famous chopped cheese and bacon, egg and cheese, the Bronx has them in spades and, in my opinion, the best. This brings up my favorite place to get sandwiches: the botanical market. If needed, it’s a great spot to get a sandwich and other groceries. My favorite thing to get from there is a beef patty when I am coming home from a trip, but if I want lunch, I’d get a chopped cheese mostly, original, I know.

Manhattan

Next up in our travels is Manhattan. Going here would have to be the first thought when one thinks of New York. Home to Times Square and many museums, such as a giant one being the Met or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This museum is beautiful, with so much art and culture in the halls, and you very much have many sites and spots in Manhattan where you can see the beauty of New York in the way it truly is a melting pot of the city and nature.

This district also has Central Park (which is right next to the Met, so I say that could be a fun day). These are just a few of the examples of what spots to see in Manhattan. Well, that would be if you weren’t looking for a show from Broadway itself. Yes, this district is filled with many majesties that one can walk to and see.

With an abundance of parks as well, and as we look through all of New York, one can see there are many of these spots. The best part of this district is that the subway (although, as always, please pay attention to your surroundings) is ever accessible and is the go-to transportation for going to many amazing spots within the city.

new york

Culinary-wise, the food scene in Manhattan is fairly New York, as one would see in the media. The spots are mostly American, Italian American, and Asian, with an abundance of mom-and-pop stores. Depending on where you are in Manhattan and in other spots, such as the financial district, it would be more expensive.

Queens

However, if you want the most diverse and worldwide food vibe, it would have to be Queens. Queens residents have plenty of options from almost all around the world, and there are also many things of nature and culture in Queens.

These places are the Queen’s Zoo, the Museum of the Moving Image if you are an avid enjoyer of media, the NY Hall of Science to enrich your mind more, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and many others show another facet of the natural and the city portions in one area. All of these areas, like how it is in the other districts, have the means to travel to and from within these areas if needed. As it is New York,, it is not a question o whetherof whether it is needed but when.

You can use these spots and the ability to travel around whenever it is possible. You don’t have to do all the spots to spend the day, but even one or two of these could be that day. Either when you’re taking your break, or you have the day off, you have many chances to go out to eat in a different part of the world or immerse yourself in the culture of New York and the people that inhabit it.

Brooklyn

When in Brooklyn, you are looking at a big city but also somehow a cozy city. As with all the other districts, you can go to many spots and, in a way, make them your spots. Staying in New York allows one to have a chance to become a New Yorker by being part of the culture that surrounds you.

Brooklyn is one of the districts that gives you this chance the most. With many spots focusing on the natural, the district is rich in warm coffee shops, flea shops, and many spots that are ma and pa, which are fully local. All of these allow one like yourself to feel like you can make this a real snug home. Although it is New York, cozy to us is not the same as everywhere else you. I trust will find your own definition.

Even going away from the notion of cozy we have here many activities and sights to see and travel when you want to. We have main contenders being walking the Brooklyn bridge, walking through prospect park, having a blast in coney island, taking a stroll the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and many more. This district is filled with picturesque moments which will catch your breath and look through it all.

The parks here are plenty and the spots to eat here are plenty, but I highly recommend you have the pizza here. All the districts have a debate on which district has the best pizza (Bronx, without a question for me), and Brooklyn has always been a top contender in this debate. While you are here, join that debate and come up with your own opinion.

Staten Island

Now, for our final stop on our trip through New York, We’re going to need a ferry ride, but as we get off, we see a district that the other four cannot compare to in terms of its architecture. Now, in New York, we make jokes about Staten Island because of its different vibe and look from the other districts.

It has a vibrant cultural scene and so many natural sites that once you’re there, you will feel like you’re in New York, but not at the same time. It has many spots that one can think of when they see New York, including pizza spots, bakeries, and foods from different cultures.

For pizza spots, I hear Joe & Pat’s, Denino’s, and Brother’s Pizza are absolutely delicious and a must-have there. If you are not in the mood for pizza, though, we have Bayou, Lakruwana, Sofia’s Taqueria, Banh Mi House, Kettle Black, Mandi House, and Goku Kitchen. All of these spots are so varied in their options, and the different cultures each represents that it would be great to try and always expand one’s palette.

Now, if you are the type for sweets, do not worry. You also have spots like Rispoli’s Pastry Shop and Alfonso’s and Cookie Jar, which will both satiate your sweet tooth and make you crave more. Getting away from food for now, like all of the districts, it does have its fine share of parks that give amazing views, such as Fort Wadsworth, Silverlakes Park, and Cloves Lakes Park. All of these parks here have beautiful sights and amazing trails to walk in, get away from certain thoughts, and give space to oneself.

As our travel together ends and we have taken a look at all five districts, I hope you feel more welcome and comfortable traveling to New York. It is a beautiful and massive place where you can find whatever you like and need with ease. Though it does have a reputation of being tough and it is not wrong it is mostly a place that when you give it respect it gives it..It’ll give you something. I wish you all luck where you land, and welcome to New York City!

What Makes Traveling to North Carolina Worth It?

Providence Health Care Staffing provided this article.

North Carolina, the Tar Heel State, first in flight and home of the cardinal, is known to be a “jack of all trades” and a desired location for most travel health care professionals. But what makes traveling to North Carolina so worth it? When deciding on a destination to pick while you commence your travel endeavor, there are undoubtedly many factors to consider. The factors are personal preference, of course, and require weighing out what matters the most to you when you travel.

Below are some perks you will find if you choose to travel to North Carolina:

north carolina

Mountains to the beach

Unlike most states, North Carolina has two of the most favored vacation spots, only about 4-5 hours apart – the mountains and the beach. The southern state includes the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, with some of the best hiking opportunities and breathtaking views on the east coast. It is the perfect way to get out into nature and just reset. The beaches are filled with some of the greatest natural sights and are well known for some of the most historic lighthouses available for touring. The beaches in NC are known for being cleaner and less crowded, with housing options geared more toward homes and families than flashy resorts.

Cost of living

Living expenses are far from affordable in most places. If you are considering moving to North Carolina, you will be pleased to know that the cost of living in NC is 5% lower than the national average and is one of the cheaper states in the country. Housing is 14% lower, and utilities are 2% below the average. Overall, it ranks as the 24th most affordable state in the US.

Climate

North Carolina

Once again, North Carolina is found to have “the best of both worlds,” even right down to the weather! NC is known for having all four seasons. In the early months of the year, the winter is dry and moderately cold. As spring comes, there are no low-humidity days that are warm and bright with occasional showers. Summer is moderately humid and very warm. Fall takes time to cool off, but the foliage is absolutely breathtaking (this is when you will want to make your trip to the Blue Ridge). Summer is a great time to venture to one of the state’s beaches. However, spring and fall are less humid and hot.

Education

Do you ever consider furthering your education while on assignment? North Carolina would be the perfect spot to do so. Duke University in Durham, NC, is ranked the number 1 Nursing Program in the US. NC Chapel Hill, East Carolina, Wake Forest University, and Appalachian State University, for a few, all offer phenomenal online courses that you could take as you work if you’d like!

Dining

One of the best perks about moving to a new place is trying the food! When in North Carolina, you must try the barbecue. NC is a BBQ state, slow-cooked over hot coals; they have mastered the sweet and tangy flavor over the years. They also are the home of the first Krispy Kreme, Texas Pete, and Cheerwine – all of which you will have to indulge in!

Attractions

North Carolina is known for many unique spectacles; sightseeing is a must! When making NC your home, whether permanent or temporary – try out America’s largest home! The Biltmore Estate is in Asheville, NC, and is a fantastic museum and tourist attraction. Other options include Battleship North Carolina, Wright Brothers National Memorial, Gem Mining, Greensboro Science Center, NC Zoo, and Carowinds (to be in North Carolina and South Carolina at once). While North Carolina has a lot of known attractions that you can see just by looking, try to find the hidden gems.

Getting to see the world must be one of the biggest and brightest perks of being a travel healthcare professional. Consider all aspects of where you go and why. Get up, get out, and see!

While being a travel nurse is a demanding profession, the benefits travel nursing can provide are wide-ranging, including expanding your clinical experience, deepening your professional development, networking with new colleagues, taking advantage of flexible schedules, as well as maximizing stipends and other travel compensation perks. But for almost every travel nurse, the key benefit is the adventure, exploration, and personal enrichment traveling provides.

So, for many intrepid souls, deciding on an exciting and challenging travel nurse career is the easy part. The harder part is choosing which assignment to accept and why. This search often begins by selecting a region, metro area, or city that fits your personality and lifestyle.

Finding Your Next Travel Assignment

Research and surveys tell us that as a travel nurse, you probably work with a few staffing agencies and have an app or tool that you prefer to leverage when finding new travel assignments. But did you realize that many of these tools and agencies are all posting the same jobs? Moreover, these travel jobs open and close so quickly that the exact job you initially applied for or were submitted to is often not the same as the placement you’ll end up taking.

That’s right, who you choose to work with is rarely because of an exclusive listing you find on a specific job marketplace. More often than not, your travel assignment comes down to your relationship with your recruiter and how you are treated by the staffing agency

We say all this to let you know that it doesn’t matter what your favorite job board, agency, or app is. The trending info we explore in this article applies at a macro level to the industry as a whole. When looking for popular destinations, our data did reveal some of the most popular trending specialties, such as post-anesthesia, ICU, critical care, pediatrics, and even remote roles. For the purposes of this article, we’ll focus solely on possible locations for your next travel assignment.

How To Turn Your Travel Nurse Job Into a Workcation

Being a travel nurse is exciting and invigorating. You get to explore places of the globe that many others don’t, helping people along the way who might not otherwise receive the care they need.

But there’s also no question that travel nursing is a lot of work, and it can be stressful at times. However, you do have a unique opportunity to have extraordinary adventures, and it can be done by combining work and leisure to make the most of your career.

While you can’t avoid your duties, there are things you can do to turn your travel nurse job into a workcation. With that in mind, let’s cover a few tips you can use to strike a healthy work-life balance as a travel nurse, as well as financial tips you can use to explore your destinations.

How to turn your travel nurse job into a workcation:

Dream Destinations

You won’t always get to choose where you’re going as a travel nurse. The idea is to travel wherever there is a need. This can make your career feel more like a journey, and your eyes might be opened to destinations and experiences you never expected.

If you do get to choose your destination, consider places you might like to go if you were taking a vacation. Think about your interests and your needs. Are you an outdoorsy person? Places like the Santa Barbara region, Flagstaff, and Salt Lake City will all be up your alley.

Do you have bigger bucket list locations and adventures on your list? Don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone and volunteer to get out of the country. Some of the most beautiful, adventure-filled locations are waiting across the globe. Not only are they great for exploring, but leaving the country allows you to immerse yourself in other cultures. Working and vacationing like a local – in any country – is better than falling into any tourist trap.

Striking a Balance

You can’t always slip away from your responsibilities as a travel nurse to go exploring or find local restaurants. But it also isn’t realistic or sustainable to focus all of your attention on your job while you’re in a different location.

Nursing is stressful, and large amounts of consistent stress can take its toll on the body and mind. Some symptoms of long-term stress include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or as if you are no longer in control of your own life;
  • Procrastination, difficulty concentrating, or problems managing your time;
  • Having a hard time relaxing.

However, with proper stress management, these symptoms can be alleviated. In addition to getting enough sleep and exercise, taking the time to balance your career with the excitement of traveling can also help.

When you find a good work-life balance, you’ll perform better on the job and enjoy your time in a new location. Not sure how to achieve the ideal balance? Form a routine, as much as you’re able, and stick with it. Make a point to do at least one self-care item for yourself each day, whether that’s a walk in the morning to explore your surroundings or enjoying a unique meal at a local restaurant after work.

Plan for your next destination to ensure it has everything you need to be comfortable. That includes reliable internet so you can get information about your destination as needed and connect with friends and family back home. Depending on your mobile provider, you should be able to gain 5G internet access on your workcation, so you don’t have to worry about paying extra or accessing public WiFi that isn’t secure. If you’re staying somewhere for an extended period, researching the home options your provider has to offer can help.

Be Smart With Your Travels

It’s important to remember that you’re in a unique position with equally unique opportunities as a travel nurse. With that in mind, there’s no reason you can’t go the extra mile (literally) with your travels and take advantage of some of the financial perks you might get from setting the country or the world.

For example, most of your travel expenses will be taken care of when you’re heading somewhere for work. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the perks of travel-focused credit cards. Consider opening one and using it for all of your expenses — even the ones you’ll be reimbursed for, as long as your employer allows it. Many travel cards have incentives like cash-back rewards, points rewards programs, mileage rewards, and airline and hotel loyalty programs.

When you use a travel card and take advantage of the benefits, you and your loved ones can enjoy extra vacations and amenities when you choose to take some time away from work.

Chances are, you began your career as a travel nurse because you wanted to help people across the globe. But you can’t pour from an empty cup. If you have the opportunity to work in unique destinations, make sure you’re striking a healthy work-life balance and turning every job into a workcation you won’t forget.
