On the Road Again: Attending Nurse Conferences in a Post-Pandemic World

CareerStaff Unlimited provided this article.

Many things distinguish travel nurses from others. A sense of adventure, a drive to help people, a thrill of new places — and of course, a mission to travel that isn’t just unchanged in the face of COVID-19 but all the stronger because of it.

During the pandemic, travel nurses were on the road more than ever before. So, hitting the nurse conference system this year may seem like pretty standard procedure. But even if your travel lifestyle hasn’t changed much in recent years, the world itself — and day-to-day travel — definitely have. And for nurses who haven’t traveled lately, those changes could be even more striking.

With that in mind, before heading off to TravCon 2022 in September, or whichever nursing conference you choose to attend next, let’s look at how Covid-19 has changed the travel and events scene and what to expect if you’re traveling this summer or autumn.

Getting to your nursing conference

Masks are no longer required while flying, nor are vaccinations or negative Covid tests. And the amount of people flying in the summer of 2022 is back to about the same levels as before the pandemic. With that in mind, those who haven’t stepped into an airport since before the pandemic may not notice too much change.

As for travel this summer, you can expect the usual at American airports — long lines and frequent delays. As usual, it’s best to arrive early and have a backup plan. For those looking to reduce hassle and lost time, consider getting TSA PreCheck® status to skip the security lines. Some travel groups, like Orbitz, offer PreCheck status as perks to frequent flyers.

From the Disaster Nursing & Travel Nursing Conference 2022 in Amsterdam to Women’s Health – Global Nursing-2022 in Osaka, nurses who want to attend conferences in different countries have a rich variety of options to choose from. And attending one of these events can be a great way to scratch your itch for international travel while still working on your career goals.

Before traveling internationally, you’ll want to check the entry requirements for each country you’ll be visiting (even if it’s just a stopover). You can find these with a quick Google search or by visiting the U.S. State Department’s website.

And remember, while most countries have eased COVID-19 restrictions (including the U.S., as of June), many others haven’t. Even if it’s just a stopover, these restrictions could seriously impact your schedule. Search Google for your destination airport’s website to keep an eye on potential delays, cancellations, or strikes (which can be common in Europe).

What to expect at — and how to prepare for — your next nursing conference

Once you arrive, you’ll want to make the most of your conference attendance and do what you can to respect local rules and guidelines. Here’s a quick checklist before you travel.

✓ Respect local mask and social distancing rules.

While most public life in the U.S. is now mask-free, many hospitals and healthcare settings still require them. On top of that, many professionals working in healthcare still prefer to wear masks at gatherings. Take a moment to double-check the conference guidelines, and consider wearing a mask even if it’s not suggested.

✓ Earn credits when you can.

Most conferences offer the chance to earn educational credits by attending certain sessions or workshops. Be sure to take a few of these sessions to earn credits toward a certification or skill to get real career value out of your conference experience.

✓ Get up to date on tech or best practices.

One of the biggest benefits of attending nursing conferences is staying up to date with new skills, research, technology, or best practices — which can be critical to growing your career in an industry that’s preparing to live with Covid-19 in the long term. Take the time to seek out a session or speaker offering specific insights into skills you want to develop.

✓ Network and make friends.

As a travel nurse, making new connections is a big part of the job description and is necessary for each new assignment. But during Covid-19, there hasn’t always been the chance to make friends amid the chaos. At travel nurse events like TravCon, you’ll have the chance to meet other nurses who love traveling as much as you do and strike up lasting friendships.

✓ Enjoy yourself!

Some people love attending conferences. But for others, it can be a chore to sit through session after session of discussion and presentation. To help get you though, plan some form of entertainment in the evening in order to have something to look forward to — and to seize the opportunity to get in some real relaxation while you’re away from work.

Top 9 Tips to Make your Vegas Travelers Conference Experience Better

The Travelers Conference is one of the biggest events for travel nurses. Travel nurses and agencies look forward to this event all year long. Although you may have traveled many places, you may have not traveled to a place quite like Las Vegas.

Below are the top 9 tips to make your Vegas Travelers Conference experience better.

1. Wear Comfortable shoes!

There is a TON of walking in Vegas, so make sure that during conference hours you’re wearing your most comfortable shoes so that you can still walk & dance in the after-hours!

2. Bring your own Business Cards

You are going to meet a TON of new friends. Have an easy way for them to remember you and get in touch after the conference. Having a photo on the cards is also a plus so your new friend can put a face with the name.

3. Distances are further than they appear

I really wish that someone had told me not to walk all the way from the Bellagio to the MGM Grand—sure, it doesn’t LOOK far, but a couple of blocks in and you’ll wonder what made you do it. The Strip is four miles long, and because the buildings are so close together, they appear closer than they really are.

4. Carry a Light Jacket

Even if it’s 110 outside, the temperatures inside and sometimes in the exhibit hall and classrooms get cold. Have a light jacket so you’ll be comfortable in any temperature.

5. Talk to the exhibitors

Find out what after-hour events and activities the agencies are holding and get an invite! With over 70 exhibiting agencies, there is always an opportunity for a Happy Hour, Dinner, or excursion!

6. Leave extra time for Travel from one place to another!

Make sure to factor in time waiting for your transportation. It can take up to 20 minutes or more waiting for a Taxi, especially at peak times.

7. Use Discount Codes and Buddy up!

Buddy up with new friends to get to all the hottest events and save a little!
New Uber riders can sign up with this LINK for their first ride FREE (up to $20)

The Travelers Conference has also negotiated some special discounts for Airport Shuttles and Lyft:
Las Vegas Limo is offering the following rates for a shuttle bus:
One way from airport to hotel $8.20 including airport fee
One way to airport from hotel $7.20
Roundtrip $13.60
Use the coupon code: TRAVCON2016

Lyft: Code TRAVELER333135

8. Don’t try to see/do everything.

Don’t schedule every waking moment. There are tons of activities and experiences to be had. Let spontaneity be your guide.

What?! There’s a Conference for Travel Nurses?!

Did you know there’s an Annual Conference for Travel Nurses (and travel medical professionals).  If you haven’t heard about it you are missing out; I’m here to give you the ‘low-down’ the ‘scoop’ or whatever you want to call it!

What is the Travelers Conference?

According to the official website: “The Travelers Conference is held annually and has grown into the largest single gathering of healthcare travelers in the United States. Organized by volunteers who are themselves current or former travelers, the sole purpose of this event is to provide a relaxed setting that gives travelers an opportunity to network with other travelers and industry insiders, earn some excellent CEUs, meet agency representatives in a relaxed, low-pressure setting, and plainly enjoy a tax-deductible Vegas trip.”

The Travelers Conference is now in its 6th year (as of the publication of this article).  It is growing in recognition throughout the Travel Staffing Industry, mostly through word of mouth.  The Travelers Conference is highly supported by Industry Experts such as PanTravelers, TravelTax, and (you guessed it…) The Gypsy Nurse.

Who attends?

The Travelers Conference is attended by Nurses, Physical Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Nursing Students, and what I like to call “Dreamers,” those that are in the medical field and exploring the idea of traveling for a living.  The majority of the attendees are female and nurses, representing the industry demographic as a whole. Age ranges of the attendees are varied across a wide range from early to mid-twenties to those nearing retirement. Travel Medical Professionals and anyone interested in learning more about this unique specialty are all welcome to attend.

Why is it important to the industry?

The Travelers Conference is an important asset to the Travel Medical Staffing Industry.  It allows travelers to connect, share information, meet, and develop a peer network; it’s important for the educational value.  Being a travel medical professional is a unique specialty in nursing or therapy positions.  Not only do you need to know your job as a nurse or therapist, but many other skills and modalities play a major role in a successful career as a traveler.

Some of the topics covered in previous years have included:
