Mental Health Care: What Is More Effective – Fighting A Depression Or Denying It?

It is undeniable that depression and anxiety (almost 50% of the people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with anxiety) can become a real issue for anyone regularly experiencing a lot of stress. If you feel like you are slowly falling into this pit, it is crucial to acknowledge it as soon as possible and start making steps towards a happier life.

#1 Stay Connected to The World

One thing you have to understand about depression is that fighting it on your own is not only dangerous but also entirely ineffective. This is why the first thing you should do once you decide to fight depression is to find someone to support you. It can be hard to admit to others that you are depressed, but it is necessary for effectively fighting it. Try to find someone you can trust like a family member or friend. Alternatively, look for a good therapist. As a part of your “staying connected to the world” technique, try to attend as many social events as possible. You can also get a pet to care for as they are known to help their owners feel better.

#2 Do Things That Make You Happy

You have to do things that make you happy to be able to fight your depression. These will probably be the things you are used to doing. If you can’t think of anything that makes you happy now, do the things that used to make you happy. You need to relax and allow yourself to enjoy whatever you are doing rather than worry about big and small problems. Try to get your mind off whatever is bothering you and think of something positive instead.

Keep your sleep schedule in check, so that you can stay fresh and energized rather than feeling sleepy and tired. Taking a nap sometime during the day can also lift your mood and make you feel healthier. Music can also help you get your mind off of your troubles. However, it would be best to listen to relaxing or upbeat music instead of something sad or depressing. Classical music can also help a lot.

#3 Never Stay in One Place

When you are depressed, it might be tempting to stay at home and never even get out of bed. However, it is crucial that you keep moving and never stay in one place because that will help you fight depression. You can even start traveling! Look for information about different countries and decide where you would like to go. If you can’t find enough details, look for information in the language spoken in that region by using a review writing service like Online Writers Rating to help you with your research.

If you have a dog, try to take it for a walk as often as possible. If you don’t have one, go out to nature by yourself or with someone else. Even parks can improve your well-being if you don’t have any forests nearby that you could visit. Hiking and various outdoor activities can also help.

#4 Keep Up A Healthy Diet

Depressed people often discover that they start eating irregularly or stop eating at all. They don’t feel hungry or, on the contrary, they always feel hungry. To fight your depression, you need to keep up a healthy diet. Don’t skip meals and try to balance out your eating schedule. You need to get a healthy amount of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. In addition to that, sweet foods can lift your mood and make you happier (dark chocolate can even make you smarter).

Nevertheless, remember not to overeat sugary stuff. After all, you wouldn’t want to gain too much weight (or lose it). Overeating sugar can also lead you to develop diabetes.

#5 Enjoy the Weather

It’s true that some people can get seasonal depression, which occurs in around 5% of the population of the United States. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy the weather even during these rainy seasons. Here are some tips on how you can use weather to fight depression:

  • Summer: Spend a lot of time in the sun, maybe even sunbathing. Getting a lot of sunshine will help you improve your mood.
  • Autumn & Spring: Use the sunny days to your advantage but try to enjoy the rainy too when it is a warm one.
  • Winter: The best thing you can do is engage in activities in the snow, such as skiing, building a snowman, and so on.

#6 Avoid Negative Thoughts

It is crucial to try to avoid negative thoughts when fighting depression because they are the ones fueling your feeling of nothing mattering. Try to substitute your bad thoughts with good ones and have someone beside you helping you with it.

Stop jumping to conclusions, especially negative ones, without objectively viewing the situation first. Avoid diminishing the positive aspect of whatever you are struggling with. There might be way more useful than you realize. If you feel bad, that doesn’t mean that your situation is bad, so you need to avoid projecting your emotions and feelings onto the situation.

Final Thoughts

All in all, fighting depression is never easy, and you will definitely feel like giving up sometimes. But if you find the right people to surround yourself with, and if you follow the advice in this article, you will be more likely to succeed and become a happier person.

COVID-19 Crisis Pay Rates for In-Demand Positions

This article provided by TaleMed.

You only need to turn on the news to know that the COVID-19 pandemic is stressing hospital resources. Nurses are needed across the country ― in urban and rural settings in all states. This is an important time to understand crisis rates when you consider the opportunities available to travel nurses.

As you step up to work a crisis rate job, know that not all travel healthcare companies are equal. Be selective about the travel company you choose to work with. Be sure you understand the policies, including COVID-19 quarantine and cancellation policies.

“We’re talking to a lot of nurses right now about what really matters on an assignment,” said TaleMed Clinical Director Susan Abbott, RN. “These jobs are high paying, but you should fully understand the job you’re going to ― and you should find a travel company you trust to take care of you.”

The Average Pay for HCPs has Doubled

Crisis rates describe a higher-than-normal rate of pay for nurses and are implemented at the hospital’s discretion for specific assignments because a position is in high demand or critical to the hospital’s mission.

Crisis rate positions have skyrocketed since March 1, and the rates are nearly double that of a traditional travel nurse pay rate across the United States. Travel job postings show rates over $3,000 weekly for ER and/or ICU RNs. These specialties, along with Respiratory Therapy, are in high demand.

“A lot of travel companies have the same or very similar jobs and pay rates. So there are opportunities for nurses to join the fight in whatever way they want to serve,” said Steve Williams, Vice President of Recruiting and Sales for TaleMed. “Now is the time to choose your assignment and travel company based on who you trust to have your back throughout the assignment.”

What to Look for in a Travel Company

Choosing the right travel healthcare company in this time can mean the difference between being on your own if something goes wrong or having the full support of your travel company. Be sure to ask these questions when considering a company to travel with:

  • What is the company’s COVID-19 quarantine policy?
  • How much detail do they include in their pay package? Do you have a good understanding of the portion of your pay that is per diems and allowances vs. hourly wages?
  • Does the company have a reputation for honesty and integrity?
  • Do you have a relationship with your recruiter, and do you have a team backing you up?
  • Does the company have a Clinical Director to provide you with expert guidance in addressing clinical concerns while on assignment?
  • What do the company’s reviews say? What do other travelers say about them?
  • How are they rated by independent travel nurse resources?
  • Do you have to wait to receive benefits? Do they guarantee your shifts or hours?

You especially want a dedicated partner by your side during these uncertain times. Be sure you have access to transparent and clear policies surrounding your travel company’s responsibilities during this crisis.

We hope that you found these tips for COVID 19 crisis pay rates for high demand positions helpful. Do you have any tips to share with fellow travel nurses? Please comment them below.

And if you have any questions, the team at TaleMed is always willing to help ― even if you’re not traveling with us now or have never traveled with us before. At TaleMed, our HCPs are part of the family. We believe in you, and we’re going to take care of you. We have the policies and procedures in place to support you.

TaleMed invites you to review our COVID-19 & Crisis Pay Jobs page to see our Action Plan and other COVID-19 resources.

Travel Nursing: TEN STEPS To Get You Started

10 steps to get started travel nursing

ReyAnn shares the TEN STEP process that helped her land her first travel nurse job here in California. Travel nursing is a very unique and amazing opportunity that she thinks all nurses should try at least once in their

career. ReyAnn feels truly blessed to be apart of this community as it has opened so many doors for her and for the future. We hope this video inspires some of you to step into this crazy awesome lifestyle.

Below you will find the 10 steps ReyAnn talks about in the video.

1. Get your license

ReyAnn states that she highly suggests getting a compact license. She says it just makes the process so much easier, especially with those states that use compact licenses.

2. Get Experience

Most hospitals want 2 years of experience, however, it is not impossible to get a job as a travel nurse with less than 2 years. ReyAnn said that if your specialty is any of the following that 2 years of experience is probably best; ER, ICU, PACU, OR, or Cath Lab. She says that with travel nursing you hit the ground running and have a lot less orientation so you have to be ready for that.

3. Update your certifications

ReyAnn suggests taking advantage of any and all facility paid/offered certifications/renewals while you are still working at your permanent/staff hospital/facility. As these can tend to get pricey.

4. Find the perfect recruiter

ReyAnn says that you almost want a recruiter that feels like a friend, someone who has your back. Someone you feel really comfortable with. A recruiter who won’t lowball you, that fights for you and one that offers you things that other companies won’t.

She suggests have 3-4 recruiters/agencies under your belt. Agencies of different sizes. She says this is to help you compare their pay packages.

5. Preparing profile/ paperwork

ReyAnn says to keep all your paperwork together, in one area so you can build your profile easier. This paperwork includes, but isn’t limited to the application, resume, nursing license(s), certifications, references and your skills checklist

6. Submitting your contract

You may find that you have a hard time getting the first contract, ReyAnn says to look at these three things if you aren’t getting a contract. 1. How picky are you being? 2. How much money are you asking for? 3. How much experience do you have. She says to make sure you discuss your non-negotiables with your recruiter prior.

Also, remember don’t take it personal if you don’t get the job. Just keep applying and trying.

7. Do your research

One one of the biggest pieces of advice ReyAnn offers is to do your research. She says to reach out on Travel Nurse Facebook groups like The Gypsy Nurse. ReyAnn said to do your research on the hospitals themselves, ask fellow nurses, and even the person interviewing you. She also highly suggesting researching the location of the hospital. But all around do your research!

8. Signing the contract

Make sure you understand everything in the contract and that you read it thoroughly as it is a legally binding contract between you, the hospital/facility, and the agency. Be sure you understand the pay break down, the bill rate, and the contract in general. If you don’t understand it be sure to ask your recruiter for clarification.

9. On-boarding paperwork/exams

This is the time to get all the necessary paperwork and exams you may need to start the contract.

10. Starting your assignment

At this point, your recruiter should be checking in with you frequently to make sure everything is going well.

ReyAnn discusses these steps in more detail. This is just a brief overview of the video. We hope these ten steps to help get started travel nursing have helped you. Do you have any tips for starting out travel nurses? Comment them below.

#StayHome: Self-Care Tips

Self-care in a pandemic has me thinking about the saying ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’. Regardless if the hair salons or massage business is closed, we have to make ourselves a priority and find the time for our revamped self-care routines. Here are some ways I’ve been staying sane while ‘staying home.’

Self Care Starts with Self Love <3

#StayHome: Self-Care Tips

To love means to learn the art of nourishing our happiness. If we think of things as loving ourselves and pouring into our own cups no matter how small, it changes the thought process behind it to “I love myself so I _____” Knowing your deserving of self-love; self-care becomes a tool to replenish said love. Do some internal work: journal, meditate, read a new book, devotionals/prayer, or take a social media break. Your mental health is key in staying strong during a fearful time, another helpful resource for me, has been therapy. It’s a listening, judgment-free, let it all out the type of environment – why wouldn’t you sign up?

Healthy Eating/Exercise/Sleep

Don’t burn the candle at both ends! All of us are working tirelessly and our minds, bodies, and souls are exhausted. The quickest way for us to leave ourselves even more vulnerable is to live unhealthily. Recharging your battery with the right stuff gives you the energy, push, and stamina to outlast these times. We’re all nurses so we know what endorphins do for our brain. So go get some, they’re free! Put more color in your diet. Get those 8 hours. Whatever you do, take care of yourself before you take care of others.

Put On Real Clothes!

#StayHome: Self-Care Tips

“If you look good, you feel good” I know those sweats are comfy, but when was the last time you got dressed? I don’t mean roll out of bed my delivery guy is here dressed. I mean top and pants with no elastic waistband—Well its time to take yourself on a take-out date, meet your friends for a virtual happy hour, or try out a Tik Tok. You’ll feel more alive and like yourself, don’t you miss you?

Show Gratitude

I saw an affirmation that blew my mind: ‘the most powerful weapon against your daily battle is finding the courage to be grateful anyway’. We all are going through a lot right now but we are all also, very blessed. So remember that, put it out in the air, and breathe it in. The best advice I could give in this time is to be thankful for the laughs, the tears, and the life.

How to Become a Travel Nurse Influencer on Social Media

This article provided by Jackson Nurse Professionals.

While social media started as a way to stay connected, today you can build a lucrative career as an influencer. Considered the gurus of social media, influencers are individuals or couples who share engaging content and have a huge number of followers. These large followings give them a platform for change and according to Career Addict,  provides them the unique ability to impact decisions made by the public and like-minded individuals.

Social media influencers can be found in nearly any profession in any industry. As a travel nurse, you can share your story and influence other travel nurses or even industry trends and employers.

If you’re interested in becoming a social media influencer, here’s how to start:

1. Your journey is your story

Social media influencing starts with being vulnerable. You have to be willing to open up about your travel nursing journey – both the good and the bad – and share details about your experiences. If you’re just getting started, stick to just one social media platform; one you feel the most confident navigating. Instagram is a popular one because it allows you to share photos and write long captions so you can resonate with your audience with unique photos and thoughtful insight.

2. Use plenty of hashtags

When you’re an up and coming social media influencer, you have to find ways to connect with other users. You can share content with family and friends all day long, but that’s only so many people. If you want to grow, use hashtags. Social media users commonly search through platforms via hashtags centered around topics, services, or products they like. For your line of work specifically, Nurse Journal recommended using the following hashtags regularly in your posts: #nurse, #nursing, #nurselife, and #instanurse, among many others.

3. Make connections that count

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that social media influencers have a large following. The more followers you have, the larger your reach and the more people you can connect with. Use the hashtag search mechanism to find other nurses and users who may be interested in your content, then give them a follow. If you have a mutual interest, they’ll likely give you a follow back.

4. Get others to share your content

The more people who see your content, the greater your chances of increasing your following and reaching social media influencer status. Partner with brands or promote your favorite products to run contests or do giveaways in order to extend your reach and get in front of new audiences. If you keep your eye on trending topics or relevant controversies, you can lend your unique perspective through video or graphics that make nurses or other healthcare professionals want to share it and talk about it.

If you’ve already got a larger than average following online, you just might be on your way to becoming a travel nurse influencer. Or, if you’ve got an eye for photography or video, you might just test a few posts and see how well they’re received.

We hope you found these tips on how to become a travel nurse influencer on social media helpful. Do you have any tips to share on how to become a travel nurse influencer? If you would like to share them please comment them below.

How To Treat Your Own Nursing Burnout

This article provided by Malone Healthcare Solutions.

As a busy healthcare professional, you spend more time worrying about others than yourself. Unfortunately, this is starting to catch up with you, as you’re battling a hard case of nursing burnout.

For a while, you thought you were just tired or battling a rough patch, but it’s become evident that the problem is much deeper. You don’t want to quit your job, so you’re eager to find a solution. Here’s some advice to help you work through this and come out stronger than ever.

4 Tips to Overcome Feelings of Burnout

Get to the Root of the Problem

You can’t fix your burnout if you don’t know exactly what caused it. Perhaps your job duties changed, transforming your position into something you didn’t sign up for. Or maybe you’re constantly required to work overtime, making it impossible to strike a healthy work/life balance. Figuring out what’s going on is the first step toward positive change.

Talk to Your Boss

After finding the root cause of your burnout, it’s important to meet with your boss to discuss the issue(s). Let them know how you’re feeling and work together to come up with a solution that can help you feel like yourself again. This might involve cutting back on your hours, starting work on a new project, or taking a few duties off your plate that are really frustrating you. Any manager worth your time will be eager to help because they want you to be happy.

Take a Vacation

Getting away from work for a week or two can be a great way to recharge — especially if work/life balance is an issue for you. It doesn’t matter if you jet off to a tropical destination or enjoy a relaxing staycation, as long as you have the opportunity to rest up and start feeling like yourself again.

Find Healthy Stress Relievers

Combat nursing burnout by taking better care of yourself. Healthy stress relievers — i.e., exercise, meditation, cooking nutritious meals, spending quality time with loved ones — will help clear your mind from the pressures of your demanding healthcare job. Feeling better will make you happier and allow you to start each shift with a fresh perspective.

You’re far too talented to waste your time in a healthcare job that makes you miserable. Malone Healthcare is here to help you find a new opportunity that truly fulfills you.

How Exercising Supports Your Immune System

Cultivating a healthy immune system is the maiden step towards leading a healthy lifestyle and keeping illnesses away. The good thing is that knowingly or unknowingly, most people constantly boost their immunity by eating nutritious meals and exercising. The relationship between nutrition and increased immunity is pretty much straight forward. The relationship between immunity and exercising is, however, not clear to many.

Studies have shown that an average US adult suffers about three upper respiratory infections in a year. However, for populations that exercise moderately but regularly, their number of annual infections averages below 2. Scientists say that this can be attributed to the increased production of macrophages in the body when a person exercises. Macrophages are the cells responsible for fighting bacteria.

Here are 3 more ways how exercising supports your immune system:

1. Reduced vulnerability to infections

The short term impact of exercise is helping your immune system find pathogens fast enough and deal with them before they start terrorizing your body. The long term impact is that exercising regularly slows down aging. Because aging is one of the key causes of deteriorating immunity, the spiral effect of slowing it down is a strong immune system. Both short and long term effects of regular exercise have aspects of lowering your risk of infections.

Researchers also agree that a lowered immune system can come from psychological stress or insufficient sleep. Exercising is a known therapy for a troubled mind. When you exercise outdoors, say after running a mile in the woods, you come back home with reduced stress- happier than when you started running. Through lowering your stress levels, exercising boosts your immune system. Besides, working out makes your body tired, so you are able to sleep better and deeper at night. Lesser stress also means longer sleep durations. If insufficient sleep is a cause for lowered immunity, which can be cured by physical activity, it is true to say that exercising cures low immunity!

2. Boosting your ability to fight with disease-causing bacteria

Regular exercise may aid the flushing of bacteria out of your lungs and airways. With the bacteria gone, your chances of contracting cold, flu, or other bacterial infections reduces significantly.

Experts say that exercise causes the white blood cells, the body’s immune system cells that fight disease, to circulate more rapidly all over your body. The same happens to antibodies that detect illnesses in the body and alerts the white blood cells. This rapid movement means that the cells discover and fight off the disease-causing bacteria early enough thus preventing possible infections.

Other studies show that the brief rise in body temperature that results from high-intensity workouts may prevent bacteria residing in your body from thriving.

3. Exercise can lower your blood pressure

How is the relationship between exercising, high blood pressure, and improved immunity? Well, according to multiple studies, regular physical activity strengthens your heart and enables it to pump more blood with less effort. That means reduced tension on your arteries and, by extension, lowered your blood pressure.

Researchers have successfully studied the relationship between hypertension and immunity. The studies show that high blood pressure messes up immunity cells known as perivascular macrophages (PVMs) and interrupts blood delivery processes to different parts of the brain and other body parts. That means fewer white blood cells and lower disease-fighting abilities.

Conclusion

There is no denying that the immune system is very responsive to exercise. How much physical activity boosts your body’s immunity levels will depend on the extent and duration of the imposed physiological stress. More research is obviously needed in the area of exercise immunology to determine the exact clinical benefits of the exercise–immune connection. This is the perfect time to manage your time better and how you spend it. Finding out where your time goes is a great start. Spending time exercising is one of the best times you could spend.

Remember, exercise alone will not boost your immunity. You have to commit to a micronutrient-rich diet, practice good hygiene, and stay hydrated.

We hope you found these tips for boosting your immune system with exercising helpful. If you are looking for a quick and easy workout for travel nurses click here.

Travel Nurse Packing Hacks for the Next Assignment

Travel Nurse Packing Hacks for the Next Assignment

One of the more common topics of interest for people outside of the travel nursing world is “how do you travel around with all of your belongings?” My answer? Easy. I shove it all in my car until the seams are busting and rust starts flying off from the pressure.

Between all of the different assignments and housing arrangements in the past three years, I have loaded my car up with all of my earthly treasures 13 times now. That’s more experience than a hermit crab has changing shells throughout its entire lifetime! Since I have done this so often, I have also developed the ability to pack up everything and put it in the car in an hour and a half because I know exactly where everything goes to make it fit. So, what are my tricks?

Use every bit of space you can and maximize on efficiency using these Travel Nurse Packing Hacks

travel nurse packing hacks

What do I mean by that? It means shoving clothes in empty shoes, wrapping breakable items in scarves or blankets, putting all of your spices in your crockpot, and filling boxes and drawers to their breaking point (but don’t actually break them, that defeats the purpose).

Put all of your liquid cosmetics and toiletries in Ziploc bags, squeeze all of the air out, and zip them tight! If they don’t fit in a bag, place a small bag around the pump or top to help control any leaks or spills. Even though you don’t need to do this every time, it saves a whole lot of cleaning up. The one-time altitude causes one to bust open, or it gets squished somewhere in the process.

Stay organized.

It seems obvious, but I have a box for toiletries, a box for outdoor gear, a box of papers and valuable, and a box just for kitchen supplies. This makes the constant packing extremely easy and helps you feel in control about where all of your belongings are while in transit.

Don’t fold all of your laundry!

This is my favorite part because I am horrible at folding my laundry anyway, so why would I want to fold or roll it all to have to re-do it when I unpack? I take everything on my hangers and shove it in my laundry basket. Voila. You also don’t have to re-buy hangers on every assignment this way too.

Purge.

In the few weeks and days leading up to your move, go through all of your belongings and ask yourself, “did I use this during the last three months?” If the answer was no, there is a good chance you don’t need to take it with you. Either donate it or find someone who could use it to downsize your belongings.

Everyone will find their own strategies and methods that work best for their individual needs. Still, I have found that keeping things organized by category in containers that don’t need to be unpacked constantly has decreased stress and work. Carry on your traveling friends; make that packing business your enemy so you can conquer it with gusto!

We hope that these travel nurse packing hacks help you on your way. Do you have any travel nurse packing hacks to share? Comment them below.

Skill Sets that are Crucial for Employees to be Successful in Their Work Environment

The article provided by Medical Staffing Solutions

There are certain skill sets that are crucial for employees to be successful in their work environment. Regardless of your work history, interpersonal skills (such as being able to effectively communicate) are important because they:

  • Help employees develop and foster strong working relationships with each other and with their clients
  • Contribute to increasing team and organizational productivity
  • Create an overall positive work environment

One of the best and most basic ways to learn any skill, including various interpersonal skills, is to learn by doing and actively practicing every day. Here is a list of eight of the must-have interpersonal skills for every professional in the workplace:

1. EXERCISING SELF-AWARENESS

In general terms, self-awareness means that a person can consciously know what they’re feeling and why they are feeling it.

Being aware of your own feelings and emotions can help you be cognizant of the messages you convey to others whether through your words or non-verbal forms of communication. A lack of employee self-awareness can be detrimental to the success and productivity of any career.

2. BEING COGNIZANT OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Are you conscious about the nonverbal messages you are sending throughout the workday? Non-verbal communication is an often-overlooked bridge between yourself and others, including your colleagues, supervisors, partners, and clients.

However, nonverbal cues can either make relationships stronger or damage them, depending on how they are used and the context of the situation. Some forms of nonverbal communication include:

  • Eye contact
  • Facial expressions
  • Body language
  • Gestures
  • Physical contact (such as shaking hands, touching an arm, pushing, etc.)

3. BEING RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS

It is well known that respect can go a long way in fostering positive relationships and work environments. Showing respect in the workplace can be done in any number of ways, including:

  • Show appreciation for employees’ efforts and time
  • Show gratitude and courtesy
  • Listening to what others have to say rather than listening only to respond
  • Being respectful of others’ ideas and opinions, even when they differ from yours
  • Not disparaging, insulting, or attacking others
  • Not taking credit for others’ work, even if you build or improve upon someone else’s work, be sure to acknowledge their initial contributions

4. SHOWING EMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING

Having empathy for others is a crucial part of relationship building in the workplace because it helps you consider the thoughts, feelings, and needs of others. There are different ways that learning and developing professionals can encourage employees to develop and grow these skills through empathy-building exercises.

5. BEING A CLEAR COMMUNICATOR

Regardless of where you are from, communication is an important part of life, as well as a necessary component of any personal of business relationship. Having effective communication skills can be the difference between success and failure.

6. ENGAGE IN ACTIVE LISTENING

Active listening is self-explanatory. It’s all about actively listening to what someone else has to say rather than passively hearing their message. Approach each conversation like you have something to learn – because you likely will find yourself doing just that.

Everyone has their own unique insights, experiences, and perspectives on different subjects. By actively listening to other viewpoints in the workplace (as well as in our personal lives), it helps us as humans to learn and grow. • Showing courtesy
  • Being cooperative and easy to work with
