Tips for Managing Chronic Illness While Travel Nursing

Travel nurses deserve all the praise in the world. Considering the physically and mentally demanding nature of the work, it’s incredible how they can care for others the way they do.

Those managing a chronic illness while navigating a travel nursing career are even more deserving of praise. Chronic diseases are complicated to deal with on their own. Add a demanding job like nursing and the difficulty multiplies. Still, it’s doable.

First, know what’s available to you through your health insurance. Understand the resources available, how much they’ll cost, and the medical help you can get as you travel to different cities, states, or countries. Then, implement these three tips. 

Create a Physical Health Routine

Travel nurses are always on the go. Because of this, it can be hard to maintain a routine that caters to your physical health. But by neglecting your physical health, your chronic illness can worsen.

Creating and sticking to a physical health routine will help. First, prioritize your nutrition. It’s easy to get sucked into the fast food, junk food diet while on assignment. But a diet like this can exacerbate symptoms if you’re living with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or GERD.

Instead, adopt a low-residue diet or one with limited fiber intake to help reduce symptoms.

Whatever diet you decide to embrace, meal prepping can help ensure you stick to it and aren’t enticed by unhealthy food choices.

Next, get some exercise. Exercise not only helps keep your physical body healthy, but it can relieve stress and keep you sharp mentally, both of which are critical in travel nursing. It’s not so much about what you do. It’s how consistent you are with it.

So, whether it’s a 10-minute workout per day, a walk every other day, or the gym twice a week, choose something you enjoy and can remain consistent with, despite your hectic schedule as a travel nurse.

Finally, get on a regular sleep schedule. One of the worst things you can do for a chronic illness is not getting the rest you need. Healing and recovery happen during sleep. Allow your body the opportunity to experience this so that you can better work and live with your chronic illness.

Embrace Mental Health Care

Nurse.org recently prepared a State of Nursing report that revealed: “87% of nurses feel burnt out, and 83% feel their mental health has suffered.” Poor mental health and burnout can make managing a chronic illness even more challenging. It can also make it hard to be consistent with treatment.

So, embrace mental health care as you manage your chronic illness. Take note of how you are mentally throughout your journey with your chronic disease. Get firm diagnoses from a mental health care professional, if you can, to ensure you’re treating symptoms adequately.

If you don’t want to go the therapy or counseling route, you can tend to your mental health in these ways:

  • Take a vacation 
  • Recite daily affirmations
  • Implement a self-care routine
  • Discover new hobbies and passions
  • Take mental breaks whenever needed
  • Read books related to mental health
  • Adopt an inherently positive mindset

Develop a Better Relationship With Yourself

“Listen to your body.” How often have you heard or read this advice when seeking guidance for managing your chronic illness? Better yet, how often have you given this advice in your nursing duties?

As well-intentioned as this suggestion is, it’s not as helpful as one might think for someone managing a chronic illness. This is because aches and pains are often a daily occurrence, and not everyone should be met with worry, panic, or a trip to the emergency room. 

That said, listening to your body is still important to ensure you seek more serious help when warranted. So what do you do? Develop a better relationship with yourself and a more substantial familiarity with your body so that you can trust what you’re “listening” to and your decisions after that.

To help you cope with how hard it can be to “listen to your body” and develop this robust relationship with yourself, try the following:

  • Attend therapy regularly
  • Practice self-compassion and mindfulness activities
  • Join a community of travel nurses navigating a chronic illness
  • Refer to how things have fared in the past when difficult symptoms flare
  • Focus on positive outcomes and what you can control in your day-to-day
  • Journal about your symptoms, what triggers them, how you feel in certain situations, and your overall journey with your chronic illness

Travel nursing has become a popular profession in recent years. This job lets you explore the country while helping those in need.

Unfortunately, the increased competition has made it hard for travel nurses to find work. You need to market yourself to employers to secure one of the few available positions in this field. Just as a businessman comes up with a sales plan to help him meet his revenue goals, you must create a strategy for locating and obtaining new assignments. Here are some tips for promoting yourself and your skills.

1. Make Sure Your Resume Is Polished and Accurate

Many potential employers first get to know a traveling nurse by reviewing her resume. Keep your resume up-to-date and highlight any credentials or certifications you have obtained. Have a trusted friend or family member review the resume for any spelling or grammar errors.

If you are fluent in a foreign language, you should mention this on your resume, as well. This skill could be useful for international jobs.

You should thus delete any inappropriate pictures or comments immediately. You may also want to make your personal Twitter and Facebook accounts private.

However, you should maintain an active LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn allows you to find job listings and connect with others in the industry. Your profile should include a link to your professional website and the latest version of your resume.

4. Find a Recruiter

LinkedIn can also help you find a recruiter who can match you with your ideal job. Try speaking with several recruiters until you find one who best fits your needs.

6. Crunch Fitness

Crunch Fitness is an excellent option for those looking for a clean and friendly gym that offers a wide variety of equipment. Maintain a Healthy Diet

As a travel nurse, you probably often remind patients of the importance of a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and lean protein. If you’re not taking professional advice, though, now is a great time to recommit to healthier eating habits.

Pressed for time, like many nurses are?

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, these strategies may help you:

  • Use a meal kit or meal delivery service. These are convenient when you don’t have the time or energy to prepare a meal. All you have to do is follow the instructions.
  • Order lighter fare at restaurants and fast food restaurants. Vegetable-based entrees, as well as grilled chicken or baked or broiled fish, can be good options.
  • Watch your portion sizes. You can still indulge. Just do it in smaller amounts.

Don’t Discount Your Own Needs

If you’re suffering from nurse burnout, you’re not alone. And it may have come from prioritizing everyone else before yourself. Many nurses have internalized a mindset that they must “be a good, nice, acceptable person,” says Ann Becks, MSN, a nurse practitioner who retired so she could spend some time reconnecting with herself and mentoring others.

“When people learn the skills and tools to unhook from this conditioned way of responding and feel the groundedness of their truth, everything changes.”

So, don’t discount your own needs, physical and emotional. You’ll also do a better job caring for others if you’re taking care of yourself.

Even the small stuff counts. “It sounds cliche to say, ‘go take a walk’ or ‘build a Lego tower with your children’ or ‘read something you enjoy’ or ‘find a few minutes to gather with friends,’ but these small things truly make a big difference in your overall well-being,” says Sisk.

Get up and move more

Yes, you are on your feet a lot at work. But it would be best if you made some time to exercise to experience the many benefits that will improve your life. Research suggests that regular exercise will help you lose weight or maintain weight loss, sleep better at night, decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease, build bone and muscle strength, and improve your mood.

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderately-intense exercise to get your heart pumping per week. And yes, you can break it up into manageable chunks of time to make it fit better into your busy schedule.

Somethings to Try

  • Brisk walking
  • Water aerobics
  • Dancing
  • Gardening
  • Biking

Check with your employer to see if you get any relevant benefits. Sisk noted that Memorial Hermann offers on-site gym facilities and organizes competitive activities, such as weight loss and walking competitions, to motivate employees to incorporate more exercise into their lives.

Be intentional in all you do

Whatever you choose to do to improve your health, be intentional about it. You might even replace your New Year’s resolutions with intentions to help you maintain a positive attitude and make positive changes to your life.

“An intention focuses on your core values rather than some hard-to-attain goal,” says Teri Dreher, RN, founder of NShore Patient Advocates, based in Chicago. “It can be a powerful tool for change because it is forgiving and gives you room to explore and grow.”

How Travel Nurses Can Look After Their Mental Health While Away From Home

Nurses undergo tremendous pressure and often experience compassion fatigue, guilt, and a mix of other emotions in a single day. For travel nurses, adapting to new situations and scenarios poses an extra challenge in prioritizing their mental and physical health.

The profession demands unconditional giving, which often results in mental exhaustion. When consistently taking care of someone, many nurses put their own health and needs on hold. It is crucial for travel nurses to find a balance between taking care of their patients and taking care of themselves.

Here are 5 quick ways you can better look after your mental health while you’re away from home.

1. Practice a Daily Self-Care Routine

It’s very challenging for a travel nurses to put themselves first and take care of themselves over others. The sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in helping someone often overshadows the essential individual needs. However, you can help others more effectively when you’re taking care of yourself.

Being in the right mental space is important to provide the best service to a patient. A simple daily self-care ritual can make a big difference in maintaining your health and developing mental toughness. This can be something as simple as journaling or reading a book, getting a good nap, or connecting with friends or family. I journal regularly. These practices will help you rebound from fatigue and unwind from mental exhaustion.

2. Improve Your Quality of Sleep 

It’s a challenge for most travel nurses to get quality sleep at night. Work hours can cover night shifts or untimely calls from patients, so it can be difficult to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. But sleep is essential for your ability to function well; without it, your cognition can suffer.

According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), nurses should have 10 consecutive hours of time off with 7 to 9 hours of sleep between shifts. There will be days when your sleep schedule will be out of your control. The nature of the job means you don’t always know when you’ll be able to change out of your scrubs and put your head on your pillow. But try to adhere to a consistent sleep and waking schedule, and aim for the hours of sleep recommended by the ANA.

Your physical fitness must also be given importance as it is closely connected to your sleep schedule. Any pain or discomfort you’re experiencing needs to be addressed immediately to avoid any impact on your quality of sleep.

3. Practice Mindfulness to Understand Your Mind and Body

The culture of urgency is prevalent among travel nurses as their job demands immediate attention to the needs of the patient. This often clouds the personal needs of the nurses. Mindfulness is a wonderful technique that can be used literally anytime, anywhere.

You can practice mindfulness through techniques like focused breathing and body scan meditation. Here are some mindfulness exercises recommended by the Mayo Clinic.

Mindfulness can help you in many ways:

  • Improved physical and mental health
  • Sense of serenity
  • Enhanced attention span
  • Stress management
  • Increased empathy for your patients and others
  • Decreased likelihood of burnout

4. Maintain a Healthy, Balanced Diet

A healthy, balanced diet is essential for combating the everyday stress of being a travel nurse. While eating the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables can be a challenge due to constant travel, simply grabbing a salad or veggie-filled sandwich on your way to work instead of starting your day with processed food can be a big step in the right direction.

A healthy meal paired with good physical activity helps support your immune system and decreases your chances of getting sick. Also, be sure you’re managing your medications while you’re on the road.

Here are a few easy ways you can improve your diet:

  • Always keep healthy snacks in your bag. Seed mixtures, dried fruits, or chopped vegetables are great travel companions. These wholesome snacks are filled with essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals, and keeping them with you allows you a faster recharge than running through the drive-thru or resorting to a candy bar from the vending machine.
  • Stay hydrated. A water bottle is an essential addition to your bag. Water helps you feel energized and prevents dehydration, which is very common while traveling.
  • Consume whole foods. Opt for healthy food choices when you can. Not everywhere you go will have a healthy meal option, but always be on the lookout for one and take advantage of it where possible.

5. Get help when you feel you need it

There is no shame in asking for help when you are not okay. This is true not only when you’re experiencing physical symptoms but also mental health issues like anxiety and depression. A mental health professional can help you get back to feeling your best, so you can get back to giving your patients your best care.

These professionals provide a safe space where you can share your thoughts, and they will also help you navigate things that are going on in your life outside of work, such as coping with loss or managing scanxiety.

Your therapist back home may be able to meet with you over the phone or a video call, and there are online mental health platforms where you can speak with a therapist wherever you are. Sometimes, these tips might not be enough because of the magnitude of the challenge you are facing. In those scenarios, your agency could help you in getting additional resources.

Ensuring Stability: Guaranteed Hours for Travel Nurses Explained

In travel nursing, one of the most misunderstood and undervalued benefits is the travel nurse guaranteed pay or hours. Agencies use the terms quite often. However, their definitions can vary drastically. What’s more, it’s up to you, the travel nurse, to decipher and ensure realistic expectations.

One of the greatest concerns when going on a travel nurse assignment is whether you will be working enough to support yourself and cover all the uncertainties with your new experience. You might wonder what happens if there is a low census. What if I don’t get scheduled as often as expected? The pay protection benefits many agencies claim to provide are supposed to be “insurance” so that you don’t find yourself in a tough financial spot. However, not all agency pay protections are equal. The Gypsy Nurse team has researched some common misconceptions. We explore your options and help you to navigate this important topic.

The Reality of  Travel Nurse “Guaranteed” Pay

Of course, travel nurses want some type of “guarantee” arrangement to ensure that they can count on a steady income. But what may not be immediately obvious is that agencies also seek this protection from the facility. It costs them money to recruit, place, and pay travel nurses. Once a travel nurse is placed, both the agency and the nurse want assurance that the hospital will pay and fulfill a contract. No one makes money if hours are not worked.

Furthermore, census predictions are not always correct. Hospitals seek the maximum amount of flexibility. The hospital wants some allowance in variance in the number of hours they will contractually agree to guarantee the agency (which impacts hours worked by the traveler) in order to better manage their costs. A majority of agreements allow the hospitals to cancel some number of shifts — a typical allotment in today’s market is up to 3 shifts within a 13-week period.  Some even allow the hospital to cancel one shift a week.

The bottom line

The bottom line is that agencies do not want to pay nurses for hours they cannot bill the hospital—neither the nurses, agencies, nor hospitals want to lose money.

Although the agency’s contract with the facility may say one thing, the benefit they provide you, the travel nurse, does not have to reflect word for word the terms of that agency-hospital contract.  Agencies may repackage this “guarantee,” and in some cases, they actually provide the travel nurse a better benefit than the facility is giving them (which can result in a direct cost/loss to the agency). This is why paying attention to the details of your agreements is so important.

Top 10 Things to Ask Your Agency About Your Contract’s Pay Stipulations

To get the most protection possible around your pay, look for answers to these questions as you evaluate your agency and contract:

  1. How is your guaranteed pay applied? Biweekly, monthly, length of the contract?
  2. Are you assured a certain amount on your paycheck, even if your shift gets canceled?
  3. Will you get paid regularly each check/pay period, or must you wait until your travel nursing assignment ends?
  4. How do low census situations impact your pay?
  5. What happens to your contracted hours if you call in sick?
  6. How many shifts in what time period is the hospital permitted to cancel, and what is the allowed call-off policy?
  7. What is your obligation regarding make-up shifts?
  8. Is floating required to secure your guaranteed hours? How far must you travel?
  9. If you are called off for low census or missing shifts for other reasons: How does this impact potential bonuses in your pay package?
  10. How do hours of work affect your living expenses stipend?

Choosing Higher Rate vs. Guaranteed Hours – Some Example Scenarios

Two Agencies offer a travel nursing assignment with 36 hours per week for 13 weeks; for a total of 468 hours.  The pay packages differ as follows:

  • Agency A offers an hourly equivalent of $38 per hour but no protection if low census occurs (true travel nurse guaranteed pay)
  • Agency B offers guaranteed pay when shifts are canceled due to low census but pays $2 an hour less, so $36 per hour.

Let’s do a few calculations to see how these offers really stack up.

Scenario 1:  If no hours are canceled during the travel nurse assignment:

 Agency AAgency B
468 hours X $38 = $17,784*468 hours X $36 = $16,848

* You would have been better off by $936 with Agency A ($17,784 – $16,848 = $936) since they had a higher hourly equivalent and low census protection never came into play.

Scenario 2:  If 36 hours are canceled—a very common canceled shift policy of one shift per month:

Agency AAgency B
(468 hours – 36 hours = 432 hours) x $38 = $16,416468 hours X $36 = $16,848*

*You would have been better by $432 with Agency B since the hospital exercised its right to cancel 36 hours.

Scenario 3:  If 72 hours are canceled—a very common canceled shift policy of one shift per two weeks:

Agency AAgency B
(468 hours – 72 hours = 396 hours) x $38 = $15,048468 hours X $36 = $16,848*

*You would have been better by $1,800 with Agency B since the hospital exercised its right to cancel within 72 hours.

The Gypsy Nurse Summary: Smarter Choices Add Up to More Money

Many agencies promote a travel nurse guaranteed pay, guaranteed minimum pay, or guaranteed hours in a contract. However, the terms of these promises can vary considerably—and whether intentional or not—mislead travel nurses with regard to pay.

Consider these key points with every contract:

  • Look for an agency that offers the travel nurse guaranteed pay. Even if the hospital cancels a shift due to “low census.”
  • Find a plan that provides dependable income and protects you from pay gaps. Accounting for situations where you are ready to work but the shift gets canceled.
  • True travel nurse guaranteed pay should guarantee you’ll make a certain amount of gross wages. This should reflect what is stated in the summary of your travel nurse assignment details. Additionally, this safeguards you against lost wages due to low census.
  • Timing matters. This means no matter what happens with your schedule at the facility, and the agency will pay you during the pay period you earned it.
  • Do the math—don’t assume a higher pay rate outweighs the benefits of guaranteed hours.
  • Think in terms of each paycheck. Know how situations will impact your finances on a weekly basis, not just the entire contract duration.

In Conclusion: Leverage every advantage when negotiating a pay structure

  • Do your homework
  • Understand all the details and fine print
  • Ask for protection against low census call-offs

Can I Become a Travel Nurse With One Year of Experience?

Is one year of experience enough to become a travel nurse? Technically, yes. Some hospitals will accept new travelers with one year of experience in their chosen specialty. These contracts can be challenging to find, especially in high-acuity specialties, but they do exist. Most contracts require two years of nursing experience and at least one year in the contract’s specialty.

I am frequently asked by newer nurses whether or not they SHOULD choose to travel without two years of experience. That question is more complex than it appears, so here are some aspects of travel nursing to keep in mind.

Aspects of travel nursing to keep in mind:

  1. Do you feel competent in the role you are in?
  2. Travel nurses get minimal orientation at a new facility. Three shifts are typical for an orientation period, but I’ve heard plenty of stories about nurses getting less than two hours of training or being put directly on the unit as soon as they arrive. New travel nurses must feel comfortable with their role and be able to start on the floor with minimal help. When I started my last contract, I had to track down and start an IV medication for my critical ICU patient before I even got my computer login information! If you don’t feel ready for that yet, you might need more experience before becoming a travel nurse.
  3. Do you have good communication skills?
  4. As a traveler, you are expected to step up and seek answers independently. Do you need labs ordered? A medication dosage changed? A bedside commode for your patient? The phone number for the night shift cardiologist? While charge nurses and other staff members may try to help you, a travel nurse must be able to communicate those needs and advocate for their patients. If you can’t do that yet, you might not be prepared to be a travel nurse.
  5. Are you flexible?
  6. We joke about travel nursing being “the wild west,” but it’s true! I’ve shown up to take a patient load and had completely different patients by the end of the shift. We step in and out of different roles and are the first to be floated to other units. Flexibility is the name of the game! The ability to adjust to new situations is crucial as a traveler.
  7. Outside of the hospital setting, travel nurses tend to jump between housing options, drive across the country for assignments, and occasionally get contracts cut short unexpectedly. Are you mentally prepared to step out of your comfort zone? If not, you might still need to prepare to be a travel nurse.

Travel nursing has equipped me to follow my professional and personal dreams. I left my staff job to become a travel nurse just a few months after hitting my one-year mark. I worked hard to build my communication skills, put myself in new situations, and purposefully prepared myself to become a travel nurse. 

During my first contracts, I learned how important it was to know my role and perform well in my specialty. I enjoyed my first contract and wished that I could’ve started sooner! 

However, I worked with another nurse who only had one year of experience, and she dreaded coming to work every day. She realized that she had started traveling because the pay was attractive but that she hadn’t given herself enough time to develop her skills properly. She finished her contract but returned to her staff job when she finished her contract. I am grateful that I gave myself the time I deserved to become a good nurse before I started traveling. I’ve seen countless nurses come and go who had the minimum experience required, and it’s honestly a mixed bag. Successfully traveling with one year of experience is possible if you prepare yourself!

Starting the New Year Right; Tips to Help Maintain Your Goals

It is a new year, which means new goals or resolutions. When you hear the term resolution, your mind most likely goes to diet and exercise

However, there are other goals and resolutions you can make as well. You might want to start saving more money, do more self-care, pay off debt, quit smoking, etc. The list could go on forever. Sticking to these goals or resolutions can be difficult. We are creatures of habit and often have a hard time breaking those habits. 

Many people say it takes 21 days to create a habit. However, according to healthline.com, It can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit and an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic.  If it takes that long to form a habit, there is a good chance that you will stop, forget, or feel defeated during that time. We have put together some tips to help maintain your goals. Any time of the year!

Create a Vision Board

A vision board is a collage of images, quotes, affirmations, or your goals and desires. These are designed to serve as an inspiration and motivate you to succeed. Vision boards can be made using images from the internet or cutting out pictures, words, sentences, etc., from magazines.

There are many versions of vision boards. Whichever you choose is totally up to you and the goals or resolutions you set. The examples you see are just a couple of options. 

The purpose of your vision board is to see the results of the goals you have set. If you want to save up money so you can take a vacation, pick an image of a location you want to visit that will motivate you to save up.

Track Results

This may seem like a no-brainer, but tracking your results can help you stay on target. Tracking your results shows you the progress you are making from your hard work.  Many people track weight when that is their goal. However, if your goal is to eat a healthier diet, track your meals. Hold yourself accountable. There are many apps out now that help you track your meals. This is just one example. Tracking your results will help to keep you on track. If your goal is to save for a trip, make a chart.  Have a starting point and have smaller goals along the way to your ultimate goal.  Mark off the chart with every dollar or set amount you add to your savings.  This will give you a visual of your end goal.

Start a journal

Write in your journal. Keep track of your progress that way. This can help you maintain your goal; you can go back and read how far you have come. This could also be how you’re feeling. Feelings of accomplishment, defeat, whatever you feel at the time, write it down. Keep track of the progress. It is safe to say that there may be days when you feel defeated or don’t want to continue; writing your thoughts and feelings can help clarify the issues you are facing with your goals and often renew your interest in the goal you set. 

Use your phone

Our phones have so many great apps to help you maintain your goals. Whether you are trying to lose weight, eat healthier, or achieve any other goals, there are apps out there.  There are many apps just for maintaining your goals.  Below you will find a few of the top-ranked apps for maintaining your goals from bustle.com.

Coach.me’s habit tracker is designed to help you create and sustain personal, career, and physical health goals. It allows you to measure your progress so you know how to improve upon it, set targets and reminders, celebrate milestones, and view your journey across the weeks and months.

The Strides app helps you get organized when it comes to tracking your goals and habits. It offers four unique tracker types and includes step-by-step goal-setting. The helpful, easily customizable progress charts let you track literally anything you want.

  • Way of Life

Way of Life makes setting goals and hitting them simple. It allows you to track your routines using a color-coded system in just a few seconds each day. The app will also send you reminders that will help you form better habits and shake up not-so-great ones. Plus, you can jot down quick notes in the diary and view your customized charts. You can download the app for free on your iPhone or Android.

Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is vital in maintaining your goals.  Keeping a positive mindset and removing negative thoughts will keep you on track.  Focus on the positives. If you have a setback, don’t look at it in a negative way. Look at how far you have come.  Maintaining a positive mindset or attitude will help in your daily life, which will feed into your goals.  According to The Mayo Clinic, health benefits that positive thinking may provide include the following:

  • Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Better:
    • psychological and physical well-being
    • cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
    • coping skills during hardships and times of stress

Many of these will spill over to your goals. So keep that positive mindset!
